Introduction
While their modern plaudits come from their infamously desirable wristwatches, the brand began life creating pocket watches, much like other watchmakers that began life during the 19th century and before. As such, it is pocket watches, like the example we have here draws attention to Patek Philippe’s original legendary aesthetic and unwavering level of craftsmanship. Featuring an 18kt yellow gold construction, a stunning silver dial with 18kt yellow gold applied indices and hands, this pocket watch is no ordinary pocket watch, but rather a ref. 725. Produced from 1940 until around the early 1980s, with about 100 examples estimated to have been produced, the ref. 725 is one of the most exclusive serially produced Patek Philippe pocket watches ever made. Powered by a manual-wind cal. 17”170Q movement, this pocket watch boasts a perpetual calendar, as evidenced by its quartet of subdials across its display. Measuring 46mm in diameter, this example’s three-part case is a wonderfully understated design that serves to allow its movement and display do the talking. Most notably, this example is one of a very rare batch of ref. 725s that lack a leap year indicator, which normally resides within the subdial at 12 o’clock, making this piece even more rare and desirable than ordinary examples of the ref. 725, and that is certainly saying something.

THE DIAL
Featuring a tremendously legible silver dial with a quartet of sunken sundials for each of its perpetual calendar indicators, this example's first series dial notably lacks its leap year indicators within its subdial at 12 o'clock, which is an incredibly rare quirk among examples of the ref. 725, with the vast majority of other documented examples featuring the indicator at 12 o'clock.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Featuring a classical 18kt yellow gold construction, the ref. 725J's 46mm three-part case features a wonderfully understated design, which allows its information-filled dial do the talking.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The yellow gold case shows light surface scratches along with a couple of small nicks. There is a well-defined hallmark visible on the winding stem and the crown has light surface scratches and a small nick. The dial remains excellent, with a couple of small surface marks present and partial loss to the minute markers at 21, 24, 26, and 27, while the hands remain very clean. Comes with Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives.
Our Perspective
An incredibly impressive feat of horological engineering, and astoundingly rare due to the difficulty of producing such a piece of watchmaking at the time, the ref. 725 is one of the holy grails of Patek collectors, especially those who enjoy their pocket watches, or high-end complications.
