Introduction
Released in the mid-80s when perpetual calendar timepieces were rare, the Patek Philippe ref. 3941 would quickly become the blueprint for perpetual calendar watches following in its footsteps looking to emulate its aesthetic design and, or, success. With its distinctively classical 36mm case diameter, the ref. 3941 appeals to the pre-modern days when 36mm was seen as a large watch, and technical innovations weren’t as intricate as they are today. One of the most important timepieces within Patek’s modern history, the ref. 3940/1s inoffensive construction, beautiful dial, and immaculate craftsmanship all combine to create a watch that collectors still clamor to own. But with that aside, its position as the first serially produced perpetual calendar timepiece signifies that it was the watch to begin the trend for the hyper-complex that we are still; experiencing to this day. Released at the height of the Quartz Crisis, the ref. 3941 even contributed to growing the gap between traditional Swiss artisanal craftsmanship and cheap machine-made quartz watches, ultimately one of the industry’s saving graces as it helped reestablish the Swiss' reputation as the original occupants within the industry. Functionally and aesthetically identical to the ref. 3940, the ref. 3941 is distinguished by its exhibition caseback and production in far fewer numbers.

THE DIAL
This example is fitted with a highly coveted first series dial, featuring flat subdials and a decidedly more vintage looking "Patek Philippe Geneve" font.

THE CONSTRUCTION
With its elegantly sloping lugs and svelte 36mm diameter, the ref. 3941J hugs the wrist as it allows the strap to comfortably drape over the wrist and provide an optimal wearing experience. Additionally, the ref. 3941 features an exhibition caseback, which is what distinguishes it from its solid caseback-clad sibling, the ref. 3940.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
The watch is in overall excellent condition. The yellow gold case shows some surface wear, with some small visible marks, scratches and light oxidation. The two hallmarks on the back of the lugs are crisp and fully present. While the two hallmarks next to the 9 o'clock corrector are still present, they are very soft and only partially visible. The dial is in excellent condition, and the hands are very clean. The watch is fitted with a Patek Philippe leather strap and yellow gold pin buckle, both in excellent condition. It comes with booklets and a previous service tag from Patek Philippe. The original certificate is not included.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
One of the most important watches in Patek's history, the ref. 3941 and its sibling the ref. 3940, contributed to the decline in demand for quartz-powered watches as collectors, and the public, began to cherish the artistry within traditional watchmaking and all of its various crafts.
