Introduction

Famed for the wide range of innovations and complications that they have introduced to the watchmaking industry, Patek Philippe’s pedigree as perhaps the most highly esteemed watchmaker is of no doubt to anyone, particularly their devoted collectors. Amongst their long list of complications lies their patented annual calendar, a halfway house between the simpler complete calendar and the hyper-complicated perpetual calendar. First released in 1996 as the Annual Calendar ref. 5035, this complication was Patek’s acknowledgement that they needed to create an in-between the other two calendar types before one of their competitors produced one. Made of 18kt white gold, this ref. 5038 that we have here was launched in 1997 as a limited edition collection of 500 pieces that sold out rather rapidly. Hosting two distinctive differences from its sibling, the ref. 5035, the ref. 5038 sports a beaded hobnail textured bezel that surrounds its entire 37mm case, and a black dial that boasts white painted Roman numerals and a unique white handset that also differs from the ref. 5035’s applied Roman indices and luminous hands. An unrivalled piece of horological engineering at the time of its release, the ref. 5038’s legible black dial displays the day, date, month and 24-hour display – a plethora of useful information that makes this timepiece a truly versatile timepiece that is equally functional as it is stunning and rare.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Boasting a gorgeous black dial to contrast its 18kt white gold case, the ref. 5038's painted white Roman numerals and unique white hands stand out proudly against their monochromatic backdrop and create a legible display that is a pleasure to look at and read, and visually distinctive from its sibling models from the time like the ref. 5035.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Featuring a stepped bezel with a unique hobnail texture along its pleasant 37mm 18kt white gold case, the ref. 5038 is universally wearable, very easy to enjoy and distinct from Patek's more readily available models.

Condition

Watch is in excellent overall condition. Case shows some superficial wear, wtih minor scratches visible along the case. Hallmarks on the back of the lugs are crispy and fully visible. Watch is accompanied by its original guarantee paper, limited edition certificate and box.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

The 5038G was made as a limited series from 1996-1997 and was a ‘sportier’ offering of the perpetual calendar series dominated by the ref. 3940. With a decorated bezel and black dial with easily readable white roman numerals, the ref. 5038G was an instant success and soon sold out. Only 500 examples of this important reference were ever made. This example has its original Certificate of Origin that reveals it was originally sold at the Patek Philippe Salon in Geneva on February 8, 1997.
