Introduction

Following in the footsteps of a whole host of iconic timepieces, the Patek Philippe ref. 5270 is the descendent of some of Patek's most historically significant models going as far back as 1941, with a chain of timepieces that begins with the ref. 1518, and goes through references like the 2499, the 3970, the 5970 and some others. Launched in 2011, the new Perpetual Calendar Chronograph was an immediate hit. Boasting a modern 41mm case with a flat stepped bezel and stepped art deco-inspired lugs, its construction is beautifully elegant, just like its heritage demands, while also appealing to contemporary tastes through its larger sizing. Featuring a seemingly busy dial, the ref. 5270 is quite legible with its twin day and date apertures at 12 o'clock, large pointer date subdial at 6 o'clock that also boasts a moon phase indicator, and small leap year indicator at 4:30 which completes its perpetual calendar functions. With symmetrical subdials at 3 and 9 o'clock, the ref. 5270's 30-minute chronograph and running seconds functions are perfectly placed in the empty space left to ensure its display is incredibly efficient. Powered by the manual-wind cal. CH 29-535 PS Q, the ref. 5270 is perfectly poised to exist as one of the most beautifully designed modern Patek perpetual calendar chronographs on the market. Marrying modern sensibilities such as its applied stick indices, contemporary sizing, impressive movement, and beautiful construction with its iconic heritage, the ref. 5270 hits every mark that could have been expected of it.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Offered as a first-generation ref. 5270, this example's bright silver dial lacks the rather ungainly "chin" that was later added to the dial whereby the pointer date subdial at 6 o'clock was dropped down into the minute scale that surrounds the dial periphery, making the first generation of the ref. 5270 the one to have.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Following a whole lineage of stunningly well-designed perpetual calendar chronographs, the ref. 5270 is a beautiful timepiece with sharp sculptural lugs and a stepped concave bezel that combine to create a truly architectural timepiece that only barely begins to communicate the complexity of the engine underneath its hood.

Condition

The watch is in overall excellent condition. The white gold case shows light scratches and a couple of small nicks, with crisp hallmarks on the rear of the lugs. The display case back is clean, with some light scratches on the white gold outer edge. The dial and hands are like new. It is fitted with a Patek Philippe alligator strap and a white gold deployant clasp in excellent condition. The watch is accompanied by its inner and outer boxes, original certificate, booklets, wallet, hang tag, spare solid case back, and setting pin.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

Early 5270Gs without the “chin” are the ones to have. They mark Patek’s move to fully in-house perpetual calendar chronographs while keeping the dial clean and balanced. The CH 29-535 PS Q is a powerhouse movement, and this watch sits perfectly in Patek Philippe's perpetual calendar lineage. Buy one now before the prices go nuts...
