Introduction

Typically known for its traditional dress watch aesthetic, the Calatrava is perhaps one of Patek Philippe’s most emblematic timepieces, with its precious metal case, leather straps, and elegant dials. Featuring all of those very tenets of design is the famed Calatrava ref. 1578. Launched in the 1950s and weighing in at 35mm in diameter, the ref. 1578 would have been a large timepiece for its day. Sporting a stunning off-white dial with concentric 12, 3, 6, and 9 numerals, the ref. 1578 features a blued steel center seconds hand, sharp dagger-shaped hour markers, and beautifully shaped faceted lugs that feed into the aesthetic of its dagger-like hour markers. With tight corners, sharp lines, and a beautiful blend of polished and brushed surfaces, this example is preserved in wonderful condition and was certainly cherished during its long life.

THE DIAL

With its well-preserved eggshell off-white dial, stunning 18kt pink gold hour markers, and numbered chapter ring, the ref. 1578 is a brilliantly legible timepiece.

THE CONSTRUCTION

Large for its time but perfectly contemporary in today's world of watchmaking, the ref. 1578's timeless 35mm case wears with a wonderful sense of familiarity, comfort, and style.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

Preserved in very original condition. The dial is clean with hard enamel signature nicely raised. The case with light surface wear but with good proportions and definition. The lugs are nicely faceted and the hallmarks are well defined. Overall, a very original and well kept example.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

Classical and timeless in just about every way, the ref. 1578 is an icon of watchmaking design, and, in this configuration with its faceted lugs, is a true pleasure to wear and enjoy.
