Introduction

Famed for their intensely luxurious eye for detail and unparalleled heritage within the watchmaking industry, Patek Philippe has long been at the top of the horology pyramid. While their modern plaudits come from their infamously desirable wristwatches, the brand began life creating pocket watches, much like other watchmakers that began life during the 19th century and before. As such, it is pocket watches, like the example we have here, that drew attention to Patek Philippe’s original legendary aesthetic and unwavering level of craftsmanship. Featuring an 18kt yellow gold construction along with a beautiful soft champagne dial with black Roman numerals and black pomme hands, this early 20th century pocket watch is a stunning example of why Patek Philippe has been widely regarded as one of horology’s best watchmakers for centuries now - a reputation that they certainly have earned and will not lose any time soon. Retailed by Shreve Crump and Low in Boston in 1918 as confirmed by its archive extract and engraved on its manual-wind movement and caseback, this example is certainly not just any normal pocket watch. However, what truly sets it apart is its engraved caseback, which includes an incredibly intricate depiction of an eagle atop a vertical tapestry pattern and surrounded by an elaborate wreath, with its negative spaces filled with blue enamel. A truly exceptional example of early 20th century watchmaking with its provenance engraved into its movement, this pocket watch is for someone with an eye for the rare and unusual.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Sporting a champagne dial with a sunken subseconds subdial at 6 o'clock and black Roman numerals in addition to its black Breguet hands, this example's understated dial is still immaculate given that it is almost 110 years of age.

THE CASEBACK
THE CASEBACK

A trophy of early 20th century watchmaking and craftsmanship, this timepiece's engraved caseback features a detailed depiction of an eagle set beneath a wreath atop a vertical tapestry pattern. Furthermore, the negative space behind the eagle is enamelled with rich blue enamel, adding to this example's incredible artisanal craftsmanship.

Condition

The watch is in overall excellent condition. The yellow gold case shows some light marks and scratches, as expected from a timepiece over a hundred years old. The guilloché and enamel detail on the case back is in excellent condition, including the eagle motif, and the decorative work around the case edge remains very well defined. Legible hallmarks are still visible on the winding stem and chain ring. The dial has some light surface marks, and the hands show some oxidation. The watch is accompanied by a Patek Philippe Archive Extract.

Our Perspective

The enamel and guilloché work on this is stunning. If made today, it's easily over 100k and the reality is it can't be made today. This is a masterpiece from the past and no doubt it was made for an important American client during the final year of World War One. The eagle motif is pure art, and the craftsmanship is top-level Patek Philippe.
