Introduction
Launched in 2011, the Patek Philippe Retrograde Perpetual Calendar ref. 5496P is an exquisitely rare and stunningly designed timepiece that followed in the footsteps of a lineage of terrifically unique Patek Philippe retrograde perpetual calendar that trace their origins as far back as the early 1990s. Featuring a silver retrograde date display, the ref. 5496P-015 variant that we have here (which itself debuted in 2016) features a classically styled 39.5mm platinum case with elegant proportions and a legible display that defies the incredible complexity of its cal. 324 S QR movement. Reminiscent of the Calatrava references that came before it, the ref. 5496P's case features a flat polished bezel that joins onto a case with soft lines flowing from the case and into the elegant lugs holding the brown alligator strap to this wonderful watch. A quirky watch thanks to its unusual retrograde function, the ref. 5496P is unique in its function yet still feels legible and incredibly executed. Perhaps a lesson in thoughtful watch design, the ref. 5496P is the perfect example of why Patek are as revered as they are - they make incredible timepieces inside and out.

THE DIAL
An incredibly legible dial considering the level of complexity involved, the ref. 5496P features a moon phase indicator at 6 o'clock - accurate for 122 years, a day aperture at 9 o'clock mirrored by a month aperture at 3 o'clock, a leap year aperture at 12 o'clock, and its eponymous retrograde date display spanning from underneath the 8 o'clock marker over to the 4 o'clock marker in a semi-circular fashion. Additionally, its rose gold applied indices and hands make for the perfect luxurious pop of color to enhance its aesthetic.
THE MOVEMENT
Powered by the cal. 324 S QR, the ref. 5496 is a sight to behold through the view of its sapphire crystal exhibition caseback with its 22ct yellow gold winding rotor and Patek's highly esteemed finishing serving as the cherry on top of this intensely elegant platinum perpetual calendar timepiece.

Condition
The watch is in overall excellent condition. The platinum case shows light scratches and marks, with a few more noticeable on the bezel and case sides. All hallmarks on the backs of the lugs are fully legible. The dial and hands are near-mint. It is fitted with a black Patek Philippe alligator strap and a platinum deployant clasp, which shows some scratches. The watch is accompanied by its inner and outer boxes, Certificate of Origin, booklets, and leather wallet.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
Famed as one of the greatest watchmakers in the world, very few brands can design as complicated a watch as the ref. 5496P, and make it as stunningly quaint and reserved as Patek Philippe.
