Introduction
During the 1950s, Patek Philippe developed solar clocks as a means to demonstrate their innovative nature following the creation of their Electronics Division in 1948 as the brand sought alternate forms of timekeeping, such as nuclear, electronic and photoelectric. Offered here we have a product of that Electronics Division, the Solar-powered ref. 809 Table Clock. Made of gilded brass with smokey grey face plate housing its dial, this is a desk clock that exemplifies Patek Philippe's commitment to luxury and technical prowess. Featuring sharp corners, straight lines and an elaborate foundation, the ref. 809 is a large and boxy desk clock that seemingly takes inspiration from antique wooden desk clocks. Featuring solar cells that power its quartz movement, the ref. 809 showcases Patek’s ability to blend traditional elegance with modern technology. The use of solar power not only demonstrated Patek Philippe's adaptability but also reinforced their reputation for precision and sustainability, securing their position as a leader in the horological world amidst the rapidly changing landscape of the 1960s and beyond. This is only the the third example of ref. 809 to appear publicly at auction.
