Introduction

Launched in 2015, the Patek Philippe Spit Seconds Chronograph ref. 5370P carried on the legacy of a myriad of iconic models from the Genevan giant that all shared one key characteristic, their split-second chronograph function. A high-horology complication masquerading as the much easier to pull off regular chronograph, a split-second chronograph allows its wearer to time two independent events with the same watch – an impressive feat considering the size the movement must be to fit inside of a wristwatch. Originally boasting a black dial, the ref. 5370P that we have here, with its gorgeous blue grand fue enamel dial, was launched in 2020 as part of Patek’s Grand Complications collection. Made of platinum and measuring 41mm in diameter, the ref. 5370P combines modern sizing standards with a classical aesthetic to result in a watch that takes inspiration from what came before it, but with a contemporary twist. With its artisanal-produced grand feu enamel dial, brushed sunken midcase, exposed spring bar caps, and stepped concave bezel, this timepiece’s construction only begins to tell the story of how complex and complicated its movement, the manual-wind cal. CHR 29 535 PS, is with its instantaneous 30-minute counter, a roller-and-cam mechanism to align the two seconds hands, and more robust isolator mechanism to prevents “drag” while running. Additionally, to maintain its link to previous split-second chronographs from Patek, it also has a one-piece clutch lever.
