Introduction
Nicknamed the "Convertible" on account of its detachable Milanese mesh bracelet, the Patek Philippe ref. 3418 is perhaps one of the Genevan watchmaker's most unusual designs. By removing the metal ring surrounding its solid case back, the lugs are revealed to enable easy strap changes – a quirky arrangement that has not been carried through into mass adoption. Released in 1958 and discontinued around 1962, the Convertible was exclusively produced in stainless steel as far as we know, another interesting detail considering Patek's reluctance to use the popular material. A rare and sought-after watch on account of its intricacies, the ref. 3418 features a gorgeous sunburst silver dial within its round 34.5mm case that ensures this timepiece's aesthetic is truly captivating, an essential criterion for any Patek Philippe timepiece.

Condition
The overall condition is excellent. Dial is in superb shape with no signs of deterioration. Case and bracelet have very minor surface abrasions throughout, but it appears the watch has the original factory finish. The hands have slight oxidation. Please note, the watch comes on its removable factory mesh bracelet, but the original detachable lugs are not included.
Our Perspective
An oddity of mid-century Patek Philippe design, the 3418 has always been a favorite of mine. The mesh band with an ardillon buckle is reminiscent of jewelry styles of Gucci, Hermes, and other popular brands in the 1960's and 70's.
