Introduction

In an industry where mid-century-inspired design language is terrifically popular, it is always nice to go back and look at authentic pieces of early mid-century design, which is exactly what we have here, a pre-reference Patek Philippe from 1941. Large for its time, this example’s 18kt white gold case is at almost 43mm long and 26mm wide, with a banana-shaped profile that allows it to curve around the wrist. Betraying this curvy design is the case’s sharp corners and flat lugs that point to its mid-century design language as brands sought to create unique watches. Sporting a bright silver dial that creates a monochromatic aesthetic when combined with its case, this example’s display is bright and well-preserved. Fitted with blued steel hands that stand out proudly against their bright backdrop and thick black inscriptions with a mix of sharp corners and rounded case-matching lines, this example’s dial is well thought-out, as we would expect from Patek Philippe. A true piece of vintage watchmaking, this example is a wonderful snapshot into the past of horology.

Condition

The watch is in overall excellent condition. The white gold case has some light scratches and marks, as expected of a watch of this vintage. The hallmarks on the case side and lug are a little worn but still legible, and the case back has a reasonably crisp engraving. The original sector style dial is in excellent condition. The dial is original, but has been refreshed by Patek Philippe during a prior service. It retains its raised enamel printing, but has some light marks visible and some loss of definition on the accents and edges of some of the text. The watch is fitted with a black leather strap and a Patek Philippe white gold buckle in excellent condition. It is accompanied by a Patek Philippe service receipt and estimate from the early 1990s that details that the watch left the factory on August 30th, 1941.

Our Perspective

An interesting snapshot into truly vintage watchmaking, this example is not let down by its age, with its comfortable and curvy modern-sized tonneau-shaped case and bright silver dial.
