Affectionately known as the “Top Hat,” the Patek Philippe ref. 1450 is perhaps one of the most uniquely-designed timepieces to ever leave the hallowed halls of Patek’s workshops. Launched in the 1940s and produced until the early 1960s, the ref. 1450 embraces the Art Deco movement with its rectangular case housing two large bands that extend past the past like the brim of a top hat, hence its nickname. Offered in 18kt yellow, pink, white gold and even platinum, the example we have here is a yellow gold example with a silver dial that boasts applied hour markers and beautiful gold hands. Known by Italian collectors as the ‘Cinesino’ due to its design being reminiscent of the East-Asian Pagoda tiered towers, the ref. 1450 is an eclectic timepiece that hailed from one of the most aesthetically conservative periods within horological history.
