Introduction

A relative of the Patek Philippe Ellipse, the ref. 3585 is perhaps one of the most understated pieces of horological design to come out of Patek’s hallowed halls during the 1970s. Boasting a rather large 36mm cushion-shaped case, its links to the Ellipse are rather apparent. Wearing large on the wrist, and still fitting in with contemporary sizing, the ref. 3585 was a rather sizeable watch for its time. However, Patek did make the ref. 3585 appears a little smaller than Patek could have made it. They achieved this result by moving its winding crown, which is normally found on the 3 o’clock side of most watch cases. Instead, Patek placed the winding crown on the ref. 3585’s screw-down caseback, which resulted in a slightly smaller-wearing case, and an elevated symmetrical aesthetic. Featuring a deep blue dial with matching hands and applied indices, the ref. 3585 sports a light cross-hatched pattern that appears like a linen finish which feeds in the subtle nature of its design with its case, dial, and bezel all working together in harmonious balance.

THE DIAL

Sporting a subtle crosshatched texture within its understated deep blue dial, the ref. 3585's refined aesthetic is magnified by the use of applied indices and matching hands.

THE CASEBACK

With its case lacking a winding crown at the conventional 3 o'clock spot, the ref. 3585's screw-down caseback sports a small winding crown that can be used to wind and set the ref. 3585's automatic movement.

Condition

Watch is in overall near-mint condition. Case exhibits crisp and sharp edges and there are no visible dings or scratches. Caseback is equally sharp and crisp. Blue cross-hatched dial is in excellent condition with very minor signs of wear.

Our Perspective

An intriguing piece of design, the ref. 3585's refined dial and large 36mm wide crownless cushion-shaped case still fits in with modern sizing while retaining its vintage sense of style and allure.
