Introduction
During the 1960s, Patek Philippe explored an unusually inventive approach to table clocks with its Pendulettes à remontage automatique par la lumière; clocks whose mechanical movements were automatically wound using energy derived from light. Rather than using solar energy simply to power a conventional quartz movement, photovoltaic cells generated the energy required to wind a traditional mechanical calibre. The resulting clocks brought together emerging technology with the traditional mechanical watchmaking for which Patek Philippe was already renowned.
Introduced around 1964 and produced for approximately five years, the ref. 503 is among the rarer expressions of this concept. Its architectural gilt-brass cabinet houses the calibre 17-250 E, derived from a pocket-watch movement and mounted horizontally within the case. Beyond its unusual solar winding system, the reference incorporates a perpetual calendar, making it considerably more complicated than a conventional Patek Philippe desk clock. With only a small number of examples known, the ref. 503 represents a fascinating and distinctly experimental chapter in the manufacture's mid-century history.

THE DIAL
The silvered dial combines Patek Philippe's restrained mid-century aesthetic with the considerable information required by its perpetual calendar. Gilt baton hands complement the surrounding gilt-brass cabinet, while the carefully organised calendar indications allow the complexity of the mechanism to be presented with characteristic clarity.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The ref. 503 is housed within a substantial satin-finished gilt-brass cabinet measuring 201mm wide, 142mm high and 90mm deep. Its restrained geometric architecture is characteristic of Patek Philippe's finest mid-century table clocks, while the hinged construction provides access to the sophisticated mechanism concealed within.

Clock is in overall excellent condition. The gilt brass case shows surface scratches and marks. The solar panel on the top remains in excellent condition. The dial is in excellent condition, with a couple of small surface marks and a darker patch to the left side. The calendar is in English. Comes with a metal flight case.
Our Perspective
Patek Philippe's solar-wound clocks are among the manufacture's most intriguing experiments of the post-war period, combining technologies that initially appear almost contradictory: photovoltaic energy and traditional mechanical watchmaking. The ref. 503 takes that concept considerably further through the addition of a perpetual calendar and its imposing architectural cabinet. Rarely encountered today, it represents Patek Philippe at its most technically curious and inventive.
