Introduction

Widely regarded as the greatest watchmaker of the modern era of horology, Philippe Dufour’s creations are some of the most sought-after timepieces contained within the world of watchmaking. With the launch of his first eponymous wristwatch in 1992, Philippe Dufour has grown into a horological icon over the last 30+ years, and today his Simplicity collection, his only serially-produced collection, exists as one of the most sought-after watch collections around. Inspired by the aesthetics of 1940s wristwatch design, the Simplicity features a wonderfully understated case that houses a guilloche dial featuring a sunburst finish in its center that is then surrounded by a black railroad minute track that is then surrounded by a chapter ring housing applied Arabic numerals at 12, 3 and 9 o’clock with a seconds subdial at 6 o’clock and faceted dagger indices throughout the rest of the dial. With just 12 or so watches produced by Philippe Dufour each year, this 34mm platinum example is believed to be one of roughly 250 Simplicity examples to have been produced. Made entirely by hand and featuring an awe-inspiring level of finishing throughout its manual-wind cal. 11 movement, this Simplicity is a jaw-dropping watch that captures the essence of what makes Philippe Dufour’s timepieces so special, its faultless craftsmanship and industry-defining artisanal nature.

Condition

Watch is in excellent plus overall condition. Platinum case exhibits fine surface wear and swirls, but free from any major dings or scratches. Hallmarks on back of lugs are razor sharp and fully visible. Dial near-mint with no discernible signs of aging or damage. Watch comes with the second dial and associated hand set, which is a printed white lacquer style dial with roman numberals. An additional PD signed strap is included, and it is in like new condition. Please note that the interior of the box is made out of a polyurethane based material that has started to disintegrate. This is typical of watch boxes of this period.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

Very few watches in the world of horology have become as legendary as the Philippe Dufour Simplicity. With just 250 pieces made, it has punched far beyond its weight class to transcend typical norms of popularity, with its craftmanship, attention to detail, and link to one of watchmaking's most influential watchmakers doing the talking rather than what typically drives hype in the modern world of watchmaking.
