Introduction
Founded in 1874 by a young 19-year-old in the village of La Côte-aux-Fées, Piaget was originally nothing but a means for Georges Piaget to earn some extra money as he worked on movements and watches during the winter. After decades of producing watches for other brands, it was not until 1943 that the watchmaker would begin to sign their own watches and develop as the famed watchmaker that they are today. From then on, Piaget began to experiment with ultra-thin watches and push both horological and design boundaries, which eventually led to the brand expanding into jewelry in 1959, perhaps the brand’s best-known avenue today. With their impeccable craftsmanship, audacious style, and dedication to the spectacular, Piaget’s timepieces and jewelry began to coalesce, resulting in timepieces much like the ref. 9706 that we have here. Measuring 30mm wide and 24mm tall and hosting an incredibly intricate 18k white gold construction and diamond-set case, this timepiece is a wonderful synthesis of Piaget’s distinctive exclusivity and rich horological aesthetic. Featuring an 18kt white gold brick bracelet attached to its oval-shaped case, this timepiece is extravagance at its very finest, especially with its diamond and sapphire-set bezel. Boasting a wonderful bark texture design across its bracelet and a stunning blue lapis lazuli dial, this timepiece is a further continuation of Piaget’s distinctive jeweler’s touch with its impeccable craftsmanship and overall beauty.

THE DIAL
Working to contrast the 18kt white gold case that it is set within and match the blue sapphires set in its bezel, the ref. 9706's blue lapis lazuli stone dial produces a colorful aesthetic that is perfectly complemented by the diamonds that surround its bezel.

THE CONSTRUCTION
A lesson in classy extravagance, the ref. 9706 showcases that even a watch with a textured precious metal construction and stone dial can be surprisingly reserved and elegant.

Condition
The watch is in overall excellent condition. The white gold case is well defined, with some scratches and nicks as expected for a watch of this vintage. The bezel is set with diamonds and sapphires, all of which are in excellent condition along with their settings. The case back has light scratches and features very crisp engravings and a clear hallmark. The lapis dial is excellent, with no cracks, and the hands are very clean. The integrated bracelet shows light marks and is fitted with a Piaget-signed clasp. The bracelet has 26 links and fits an approximately 5½” wrist.
Our Perspective
Showcasing how vibrant design and incredible craftsmanship can combine to create a wonderfully unique watch, this timepiece is a great reminder of how Piaget has been able to grow into the watchmaker and jeweler it has today in what is a relatively short period of time, compared to plenty of others in the industry at least.
