Introduction
Founded in 1874 by a young 19-year-old in the village of La Côte-aux-Fées, Piaget was originally nothing but a means for Georges Piaget to earn some extra money as he worked on movements and watches during the winter. After decades of producing watches for other brands, it was not until 1943 that the watchmaker would begin to sign their own watches and develop as the famed watchmaker that they are today. From then on, Piaget began to experiment with ultra-thin watches and push both horological and design boundaries, which eventually led to the brand expanding into jewelry in 1959, perhaps the brand’s best-known avenue today. With their impeccable craftsmanship, audacious style, and dedication to the spectacular, Piaget’s timepieces and jewelry began to coalesce, resulting in timepieces much like the ref. 8673 that we have here. A member of the Polo collection that launched in 1979 as models like the Nautilus, Royal Oak, 222 and more took off, the ref. 8673 is a dressier leather-strapped version of the Polo that was most often offered as a more casual integrated bracelet timepiece. Boasting a luxurious flair befitting for a watchmaker turned jeweller like Piaget, the 18kt yellow gold Polo ref. 8673 sports a gadroon-laced design (the horizontal bars) that runs through its 18kt yellow gold case and along its black dial, giving it a pinstripe tuxedo design. Thanks to its unique aesthetic, the Polo quickly became a cult-hero, and today it has enjoyed an immense increase in popularity thanks to the recent launch of a new Polo collection from Piaget.

THE DIAL
Boasting a black dial with vertical gadroons that run vertically through its display, the ref. 8673's resulting aesthetic is reminiscent of a tuxedo finish thanks to the resulting pinstripe effect.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Offered as a dressy men's option from the Polo collection, the ref. 8673's 31mm diameter 18kt yellow gold case ensures that it has a sleek and elegant profile on the wrist, with its uniquely shaped lugs adding to its unique character.

THE PROFILE
Fitting in with Piaget's affinity for thin watches, the Polo benefits from a quartz movement that enables its case to sit flat on the wrist and accentuate its unique profile.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The yellow gold case remains well defined, with surface scratches and light nicks to the case sides. The case back retains crisp engravings and hallmarks, though two screws are missing. The black dial, with fluted finish matching the case design, remains very clean, with a faded gold Piaget signature. There are a few marks visible on the crystal and some minor debris trapped underneath. The gold no-lume dauphine hands remain excellent. It is fitted with a black leather strap and a gold-coloured pin buckle, both remaining in very good condition.
Our Perspective
A dressier version of the Polo, the ref. 8673 offered the collection's signature gadroon-laden design in a case on a leather strap, which spoke to the elegance that Piaget's clientele were after.
