Founded in 2010, Ressence has become one of the most visually unique and technically innovative independent watchmakers of the last decade. As part of this drive to create visually novel timepieces, Ressence fit their timepieces with one of the most unique displays in all of watchmaking, a collection of small subdial satellites that rotate around the display as time passes. Expanding from their usual sources of inspiration, Ressence collaborated with legendary watch designer Alain Silberstein in 2022 to create a watch that embodies their shared experiences as designers from the peripheries of traditional watchmaking. Created specifically for Grail Watch, a project founded by Wei Koh that is dedicated to bringing independent watchmakers together, this limited edition timepiece of just 26 pieces offers Ressence’s unique construction in conjunction with Alain’s unique color palette and visual detailing. As a result, the Carpe Diem Type 1 communicates both of its designer’s influence through their signature details, such as Ressence’s trio of constantly rotating subdials and Alain’s injection of color. The three subdials showcase the hours, seconds, and days of the week. The lone rotating light blue arrow-shaped indicator displays the minutes on the peripheral chapter ring that are executed in white and light blue. The hours are displayed by the red subdial, with the tulip acting as the hand, the yellow handed subdial displays the day of the week with the yellow square denoting Sunday and the final subdial with the skull reads the running seconds.
