Introduction
Long before the Daytona, Rolex had already established a significant presence in chronograph watchmaking. During the 1930s and 1940s, the manufacture produced a fascinating series of predominantly non-Oyster chronographs, experimenting with case materials, dial configurations and scales that would ultimately help establish the foundations of its later sports chronographs.
Among these early references is the 3484, introduced around 1939 and produced in relatively small numbers in both stainless steel and gold. Measuring just 33mm, its compact non-Oyster case houses the celebrated Valjoux 23, a manually wound column-wheel chronograph movement that became one of the most important chronograph calibres of the 20th century. This yellow gold example is particularly attractive, pairing the warmth of its precious-metal case with a highly detailed silvered multi-scale dial. A rare survivor from Rolex's formative chronograph era, the ref. 3484 provides a fascinating glimpse at the company's approach to the complication decades before the Cosmograph Daytona.

THE DIAL
The aged off-white dial captures the complexity and character of Rolex's pre-war chronographs, combining two subsidiary registers with prominent Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 and printed timing telemeter and tachymeter scales around its perimeter.
THE CONSTRUCTION
At 33mm, the ref. 3484 is compact by modern standards but beautifully proportioned for its period. The non-Oyster 18K yellow gold case features a slim polished bezel, extended lugs and rectangular chronograph pushers, giving it the elegant profile characteristic of Rolex's earliest purpose-built wrist chronographs.

Condition
Watch is in overall very good condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows surface scratches and marks, as expected of a watch of this vintage. The case back has light scuffs and scratches, with a couple of small nicks to the rear of the lugs, and retains a partially legible stamped serial number. The pushers and winding crown both show signs of wear. The dial has developed age-related patina, with spotting across the surface. The outer tachymeter scale remains legible, while the inner telemeter scale has faded. The radium hour markers, including the Arabic 12 and 6, have darkened over time. The blued syringe hour and minute hands retain their darkened luminous material, while the blued central chronograph hand remains in excellent condition, with some light crazing to its finish. Fitted with a leather strap with gold-plated pin buckle.
Our Perspective
The Daytona understandably dominates the conversation around vintage Rolex chronographs, but references such as the 3484 reveal just how deep the manufacture's chronograph history really runs. Its compact yellow gold case, elaborate multi-scale dial and column-wheel Valjoux 23 movement combine to create a particularly charming early Rolex, and one that represents an important chapter in the development of the brand's chronograph lineage.
