Introduction
Introduced during the 1930s, Rolex's so-called Bubbleback watches played an important role in the development of the brand's automatic wristwatches. Their familiar nickname derives from the distinctly domed case back required to accommodate Rolex's early self-winding mechanism, while the watches themselves were produced in an extraordinary variety of case metals, dial configurations and styles. Compact, characterful and unmistakably of their period, Bubblebacks represent a considerably more experimental chapter in Rolex's history than the increasingly standardised collections that followed.
Dating to 1946, the present reference 3131 is housed in a 32mm 18k yellow gold case and features a refinished, non-luminous dial, something frequently encountered on watches of this age following decades of use and servicing. Adding considerably to its period character is a US-made Champion gold-plated expanding bracelet.

THE DIAL
The dial has been refinished at some point during the watch's life, a relatively common occurrence among Bubblebacks and other watches of this period, many of which underwent cosmetic restoration during routine servicing long before originality became such an important consideration for collectors.
THE CONSTRUCTION
At 32mm, the 18k yellow gold case has the compact proportions typical of Rolex watches from the period. Its defining feature is the strongly domed case back that gave the Bubbleback family its enduring nickname, providing the additional space necessary to accommodate Rolex's early automatic winding architecture.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows surface scratches and nicks, as expected of a watch of this vintage. The gold capping on the winding crown has worn away in places. The dial has been refinished, and the hands remain very clean. It is fitted with a gold-plated JB Champion expanding bracelet showing surface scratches. The bracelet is fitted with 29 links and fits approximately a 6½” wrist.

Our Perspective
Bubblebacks offer a fascinating glimpse into Rolex before its modern design language became firmly established, combining early automatic watchmaking with an extraordinary variety of cases and dials. This 1946 reference 3131 has plenty of period charm, particularly through the combination of its yellow gold case and unusual Champion expanding bracelet, while its refinished dial reflects the long working life typical of watches approaching 80 years old.
