Rolex Cellini 4012 Blue Dial Ribbed Case 18k YG

How do I bid? Start here

Introduction

Launched in 1968 and stemming from Rolex’s acceptance of the idea that some of their customers would like to own a second watch, the Rolex Cellini collection is perhaps one of the brand’s most widely varied collections, with round leather strapped dress watches to oval shaped watches and tonneau-shaped pieces on integrated bracelets to rectangular-shaped dress watches like the Cellini ref. 4012 that we have here. Featuring an 18kt yellow gold rectangular case with horizontal ribbing that measures 32mm x 25mm, the ref. 4012 is an unusual timepiece given Rolex’s typically reserved design language. Featuring a metallic finish dial in blue, this particular example lacks any hour markers or dial furniture that could be used to tell the time besides its applied Rolex coronet at 12 o’clock. Powered by a manual-wind cal. 1600 movement and wearing like a larger variant of the Cartier Tank, but with some unique features like its ribbed construction and metallic dial, the ref. 4012 is an unsung hero within the Cellini collection.

Boasting a blue dial with a metallic finish that was specific to a handful of rare Cellini variants like the ref. 4012, this example's dial is the perfect accompaniment to its unique 18kt yellow gold case.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

A pleasure on the wrist thanks to its ribbed construction, the ref. 4012's 32mm x 25mm 18kt yellow gold case carries a significant presence thanks to its unique profile and lug-free design.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information. Please note that while the watch runs at time of cataloging, the timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.

Condition

Watch is in excellent cosmetic condition. Case shows light surface wear, with oxidation that has developed on its surfaces. Caseback engravings are crisp and fully visible. The dial is in excellent overall condition and shows only minor signs of aging. Watch comes on a generic strap and a Baume & Mercier plated buckle. Please note that while the watch runs at time of cataloging, the timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

Aesthetically interesting and horologically important for Rolex given its role within the expansion of their design language, the Cellini collection has long been overlooked by collectors who failed to appreciate its finer points. However, as collectors begin to expand their horizons beyond the typical sports watches, it is models like the ref. 4012 that are reaping the rewards and gaining traction and demand.
