Introduction
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Rolex explored a more experimental side of watchmaking, producing a fascinating range of designs that contrasted with the functional character of its Oyster collection. Nowhere was this more evident than in the Cellini family, which provided the manufacture with an opportunity to experiment with unconventional case shapes, precious-metal bracelets and decorative dial materials. Named after the Renaissance goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini, the collection embraced a distinctly jewellery-inspired approach to watch design. During this period, Rolex also developed an interest in unusual natural materials, introducing dials crafted from hardstones such as lapis lazuli, malachite and onyx, alongside a less familiar but equally intriguing selection made from wood. These wooden dials offered a completely different aesthetic, with their organic grain patterns providing a striking contrast to the precision and geometry of traditional watchmaking.
Dating to 1981, this Cellini ref. 4377 is a particularly captivating example of Rolex's creative approach during this period. Its distinctive 18K yellow gold case features an unusual angular profile, with gently tapering sides framing a richly patterned mahogany burlwood dial. The watch is fitted with an integrated yellow gold bracelet featuring a finely textured surface, while the connecting links are embellished with blue cabochons at either end, introducing a decorative detail. Powered by the manually wound Rolex calibre 1601, the ref. 4377 combines traditional Swiss watchmaking with a design that owes as much to jewellery and decorative arts as it does to conventional horology. The result is a distinctive vintage Rolex that illustrates the breadth of the manufacture's design ambitions beyond its celebrated professional watches.

THE DIAL
The mahogany burlwood dial displays an intricate natural grain, with swirling patterns and rich brown tones creating a distinctive organic appearance. Slender applied yellow gold baton markers and matching hands maintain a restrained two-hand layout, while the applied Rolex coronet and Cellini signature provide the finishing details.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 18K yellow gold case measures approximately 29 × 28.5mm and features a distinctive angular profile, with gently tapering sides and a broad, flat upper surface. Its geometric form creates an elegant frame for the unusual wooden dial. A snap-on case back completes the construction, while the integrated bracelet reinforces the watch's jewellery-inspired design.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows surface scratches and small nicks, as expected of a watch of this vintage. The case back shows scratches and retains very well-defined hallmarks, along with legible serial number and 18K stamps. The burlwood dial is in near-mint condition, while the hands remain very clean. There is a mark along the lower edge of the crystal. The articulated 18K yellow gold bracelet shows some surface marks, while the textured finish remains very well defined. The clasp retains a crisp applied Rolex coronet. The bracelet measures approximately 7” in length.
Please note: The watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.
Our Perspective
The Cellini ref. 4377 is a wonderful example of Rolex at its most adventurous. Its richly patterned burlwood dial, unusual geometric case and elaborate cabochon-accented gold bracelet combine to create a distinctive expression of the manufacture's lesser-known decorative watchmaking.
