Introduction
Stemming from Rolex’s acceptance of the idea that some of their customers would like to own a second watch, the Rolex Cellini collection is perhaps one of the brands most widely varied collections, with round leather strapped dress watches to oval shaped pieces of distilled excellence and even integrated bracelet watches like the King Mids ref. 4315 that we have here, the collection is varied and rich with diversity. Launched in the 1960s, Rolex approached a young Gerald Genta to design a gold watch fit for royalty. Inspired by Athens’ Parthenon temple, Genta designed the King Midas with an asymmetrical pentagon-shaped case with a left-handed crown arrangement, for the first time in Rolex’s history, with a minimalist integrated bracelet. Named after King Midas, whose touch could turn anything to gold, the King Midas ref. 4315 was an exclusive timepiece that weighed double that of a Day-Date, Rolex’s flagship and most exclusive collection. Taking elements of King Midas’ story and implementing them into the watch itself, Genta showcased his ability to create a unique watch unlike anything else. With its pentagonal case reflecting the Parthenon’s roof, the left-sided crown inspired by King Midas’ left hand’s golden touch and minimalist dial serving to accentuate the rest of the design, the ref. 4315 is perhaps one of Rolex’s most unique watches ever, and one that we’re delighted to offer here on Loupe This.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Designed be Gerald Genta, the King Midas includes an integrated bracelet, an atypical pentagonal shape and a left-handed crown arrangement; the only watch from Rolex to ever feature one until 2022's GMT-Master II "Sprite."

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

THE ENGRAVINGS
In addition to its unusual "King Midas" engraving on the midcase, the ref. 4315 was, and still is, the only watch that Rolex has individually numbered.
Condition
Watch is in excellent overall condition, showing careful signs of use. There are some scratches and wear visible, including some "shirt cuff" wear along the side of the bezel, as well as some misc scratches along the bracelet. Dial has light oxidation along the edge as shown in the images. Bracelet has 21 links total, with very minimal stretch.
Our Perspective
An entirely unique watch that completely breaks from Rolex convention, the King Midas offered, and still offers, a completely different experience and aesthetic from anything the brand has ever produced.
