Rolex Chronograph 6238 Black Galvanic Dial

How do I bid? Start here

Introduction

Produced during the early 1960s, the Rolex ref. 6238 represents the final generation of chronographs before the arrival of the Cosmograph ref. 6239 and what would ultimately become the Daytona. Often referred to today as the "Pre-Daytona", the 6238 introduced several design elements that would carry into its successor, most notably its baton hands and clean three-register layout. Crucially, however, its tachymeter scale remained printed on the dial rather than migrating to the bezel, giving the watch a restrained appearance quite distinct from the Daytona that followed.

While the overwhelming majority of ref. 6238s were fitted with silver dials, this circa 1963 example features an exceptionally rare black galvanic dial without luminous plots. The dial was produced using a galvanic process, whereby the underlying brass plate forms the gilt text and scales, but unlike earlier Rolex gilt dials, the surface was not finished with lacquer. These early black galvanic dials are further distinguished by the characteristic “T-SWISS-T” signature, with hyphens, at six o’clock; later black dials instead carry the “T SWISS T” designation. Black-dial 6238s were produced in extremely small numbers and today rank among the most coveted executions of Rolex’s pre-Cosmograph chronographs.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The defining feature of this ref. 6238 is its exceptionally rare black galvanic dial, a configuration produced in dramatically smaller numbers than the familiar silver version. Applied baton hour markers sit against the stark black surface without luminous plots, while the tachymeter scale is printed directly around the dial's perimeter and three recessed registers complete the beautifully restrained monochromatic display.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

At 36mm, the ref. 6238 retains the compact proportions of Rolex's earlier chronographs, with pump pushers and a smooth stainless steel bezel. Unlike the ref. 6239 that followed, its tachymeter remains on the dial, leaving the bezel completely unmarked and giving the watch the elegant appearance that distinguishes the Pre-Daytona generation.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows surface scratches and marks, as expected of a watch of this vintage. The case back has surface scratches, while the bezel retains a sharp edge. The pushers and winding crown are in excellent condition. The dial is excellent, with a few minor marks to the sub-dials. There is no luminous on the dial, nor are there any traces that it was ever present. The hands remain clean, with darkened luminous material. The acrylic crystal has a number of scuffs and scratches. It is fitted with a brown leather strap and a steel Rolex pin buckle.

Our Perspective

The ref. 6238 already occupies an important position as the bridge between Rolex's traditional chronographs and the Cosmograph Daytona, but the black galvanic dial transforms it into something altogether rarer. Far more discreet than the exotic dials associated with vintage Daytonas, its significance is apparent only to those who know what they are looking at; precisely the kind of understated rarity that makes the finest vintage Rolex watches so compelling.
