Introduction
The ref. 116500LN represents the final evolution of the long-running 1165xx generation of Rolex Daytona, a family introduced in 2000 alongside Rolex's first fully in-house automatic chronograph movement. The calibre 4130 fundamentally reworked the architecture of its Zenith-based predecessor, reducing the number of components while introducing a vertical clutch and increasing the power reserve to approximately 72 hours. The resulting movement would remain at the heart of the Daytona for more than two decades, establishing the mechanical foundation for one of the longest-lived generations in the model's history.
Introduced in 2016, the ref. 116500LN brought the most obvious visual change of that generation: a black Cerachrom bezel replacing the engraved steel bezel of the preceding ref. 116520. Offered with either a white or black dial, the latter creates an especially cohesive appearance, with its black surface and contrasting silver-coloured chronograph registers visually connected to the ceramic bezel.

THE DIAL
The black dial is defined by three contrasting silver-coloured chronograph registers, with running seconds positioned at six o'clock and the chronograph counters at three and nine. Applied Chromalight-filled hour markers and hands provide legibility, while the monochromatic arrangement closely complements the surrounding black Cerachrom bezel.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 40mm stainless steel Oyster case combines screw-down chronograph pushers and a Triplock winding crown with a fixed black Cerachrom tachymeter bezel. It is paired with Rolex's three-link Oyster bracelet and Oysterlock clasp, completing the robust architecture that characterised the final generation of calibre 4130-powered Daytonas.

Our Perspective
The ref. 116500LN occupies an important position in modern Daytona history: it introduced the ceramic bezel to the stainless steel Daytona while retaining the calibre 4130 architecture that had defined the collection since 2000. Dating to 2023, this example comes from the final year of production, making it a particularly fitting endpoint for the 1165xx generation and Rolex's original in-house automatic Daytona era.
