Introduction
Introduced in 2004, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 116509 marked the arrival of the first in-house automatic Daytona movement, the calibre 4130, housed within an 18k white gold case with white gold bracelet. While the stainless steel Daytona has long dominated headlines, precious-metal references such as the 116509 have quietly become favourites among seasoned collectors, offering the same legendary chronograph in a considerably more exclusive package. Produced for almost two decades, the reference has earned a reputation as one of the most versatile modern Daytonas, balancing precious-metal luxury with remarkable everyday wearability.
This 2022 example is fitted with one of the collection's most sought-after configurations: the sunburst blue dial with contrasting red accents. Combined with the understated appearance of white gold, it creates a watch whose true value is often recognised only by those familiar with Rolex's precious-metal sports models. Unlike later generations equipped with ceramic bezels, the 116509 retains a solid 18k white gold tachymeter bezel, preserving the classic proportions and aesthetic of earlier Daytonas while benefiting from the outstanding performance and reliability of the in-house calibre 4130. It is a reference that has evolved from an understated alternative into one of the most desirable modern Daytonas.

THE DIAL
The vibrant sunburst blue dial has become one of the defining looks of this modern Daytona. Contrasting red Daytona text and polished white gold hour markers create a distinctive combination that is both sporty and unmistakably luxurious.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Crafted entirely from 18k white gold, the 40mm Oyster case retains the classic engraved tachymeter bezel that defined the Daytona for decades. Its understated appearance disguises the precious metal construction, making it one of the collection's ultimate "if you know, you know" references.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall near-mint condition. The 18K white gold case shows light signs of very careful wear. Previous owner applied aftermarket clear protective film that remains on most surfaces. There are a couple of tiny marks on the upper chronograph pusher and a few light signs of wear to the case. The hallmarks on the rear of the lugs remain crisp. The bezel is very clean with a sharp edge. The dial and hands are like new. It is fitted with an 18K white gold bracelet with 9 links, 2 of which are removable, and fits approximately a 6½” wrist. There are 4 spare links included. Comes with the inner and outer boxes, warranty card, three booklets, document holder, and two hangtags.
Our Perspective
The 116509 has quietly become one of the standout references of the six-digit Daytona generation. Combining the superb calibre 4130, the timeless appeal of the engraved metal bezel and one of Rolex's most celebrated dial colours, it offers a level of discretion that is increasingly rare among modern luxury sports watches. For many collectors, it represents the sweet spot between vintage-inspired design and contemporary Rolex engineering.
