Introduction
The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 116520 occupies an important place in the history of the brand's most celebrated chronograph. Introduced in 2000, it marked the arrival of Rolex's first entirely in-house automatic chronograph movement, the calibre 4130, replacing the Zenith-derived calibre 4030 that had powered the previous generation. Although the familiar stainless steel case, engraved tachymeter bezel and three-register dial remained, the new movement brought significant mechanical improvements and subtle changes to the dial layout. Produced until 2016, the ref. 116520 has become a particularly interesting reference for collectors, with numerous small variations emerging throughout its 16-year production run.
Among the most intriguing is the so-called ‘APH Dial’, a subtle typographical variation found on certain later examples. Its nickname refers to the unusual spacing within the word COSMOGRAPH, where the final three letters, ‘APH’, appear slightly separated from the preceding text. It is an almost imperceptible detail, but precisely the sort of distinction that fascinates serious Daytona collectors. First appearing on white-dial examples around 2009, the variation subsequently appeared on black-dial watches and continued sporadically until the reference was discontinued. This example combines the desirable white APH dial with the classic steel-bezel Daytona configuration, representing one of the more engaging collector variations of Rolex's first fully in-house automatic chronograph.

THE DIAL
The white dial features contrasting silver-toned chronograph registers, applied white gold hour markers and the familiar red DAYTONA signature. Its defining detail is the unusual spacing of the COSMOGRAPH inscription, with a visible separation before the final three letters, ‘APH’. This subtle typographical variation distinguishes it from standard-production examples.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 40mm stainless steel Oyster case features screw-down chronograph pushers, protective crown guards and a fixed steel tachymeter bezel. Its polished case flanks and solid-link Oyster bracelet give the watch the familiar proportions and substantial construction that defined the Daytona before the introduction of ceramic bezels in 2016.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall near-mint condition. The stainless steel case shows only a few light scratches to the front, inner edges and backs of the lugs, resulting from the bracelet having been removed at some point. The bezel is like new, as are the dial and hands. The stainless steel Oyster bracelet retains protective stickers on the clasp and shows only light signs of handling. The bracelet is fitted with 13 links, six of which are removable, and fits approximately an 8” wrist. Comes with inner and outer boxes, warranty card booklet and hangtag.
Our Perspective
Rolex collecting has always rewarded attention to detail, and the APH Daytona is a perfect illustration of that philosophy. A tiny difference in the spacing of a dial inscription has created a recognised variation within an otherwise familiar reference. Beyond its typographical curiosity, the 116520 remains an important Daytona for introducing the calibre 4130 and establishing the mechanical foundation of the modern collection.
