Introduction

Released to celebrate Rolex's 40th anniversary in 1945, the Rolex Datejust has become one of the Genevan Giant's most iconic watches. The world's first wristwatch to display the date via an aperture on the dial, the Datejust revolutionized wristwatch design for decades to follow. With its emblematic Cyclops lens, jubilee bracelet (designed specifically for the model in 1945), and classy fluted precious metal bezel, the Datejust's aesthetic has always been that of pure elegance and class. Perhaps one of Rolex's most recognizable designs, the Datejust has evolved from its dressier roots into a perfectly capable timepiece rivaling the robustness of most brand's sports watches. Featuring a stainless steel case with a screw-down crown and caseback, the Datejust packs an impressive 100m of water resistance alongside its consistently capable movements and construction that have enabled it to become one of the best-equipped watches for daily wear and tear. Available with several different dial options, in a multitude of materials, and across many styles, the Datejust is an inescapable reflection of its owner, with a model out there to suit pretty much everybody's tastes and preferences.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Featuring a champagne dial that perfectly matches its 18kt yellow gold accents such as its fluted bezel and crown, this example's design is cohesive, but with its red Khanjar dagger emblem at 6 o'clock marking this as a piece that was specially made for the Sultanate of Oman, this example is far more special than just a run-of-the-mill Datejust.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Offered on a leather strap instead of its more showy Jubilee bracelet, this Datejust features a sense of distinction given the understated nature to leather and it classy aesthetic.

Condition

The watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case has some scratches and marks, with light endlink rub on the rear of the lugs. The case has been polished in the past. The yellow gold bezel is well-defined and has a pleasing age-related patina. The dial is excellent, with a couple of missing lume plots, while the red Khanjar emblem remains very crisp. The hands are later additions. The watch is fitted with a generic leather strap with a stainless steel pin buckle.

Our Perspective

Aesthetically muted thanks to its leather strap but then uplifted through its exceptionally rare Khanjar dagger emblem at 6 o'clock, this example embraces the duality of Rolex's design and the luxury they have come to communicate.
