Introduction
Introduced during the mid-20th century, the Rolex Datejust established the template for the modern automatic calendar wristwatch and remains one of the brand’s most enduringly versatile models. By the 1960s, the Datejust had evolved into a refined everyday timepiece available in numerous dial, bezel, and bracelet configurations, allowing collectors today to appreciate the subtle variations that distinguish different examples. The ref. 1603 is particularly recognized for its engine-turned bezel, offering a sportier and more understated alternative to the fluted variants of the period. Powered by Rolex’s officially certified chronometer movement and housed within the classic 36mm Oyster case, the Datejust combined precision, durability, and elegance in a way few watches could rival. The presence of a sigma dial further enhances the appeal of this example, marking it as a watch produced during an important transitional period in Rolex dial production.

THE DIAL
The silver sunburst dial features applied baton hour markers and the small sigma symbols positioned beneath the “Swiss” signature at six o’clock, indicating the use of precious metal components within the dial furniture. The sunburst finishing gives the dial a subtle sense of depth and light play, while the clean monochromatic palette perfectly complements the restrained aesthetic of the ref. 1603.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 36mm Oyster case is paired with the reference’s signature engine-turned bezel, a distinctive feature that offers a more utilitarian interpretation of the classic Datejust design. Combined with the period Rolex stainless steel bracelet dated to 1964, the watch retains the balanced proportions and everyday versatility that helped establish the Datejust as one of Rolex’s defining models.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows light surface scratches and signs of a previous polish, while the case back displays surface scratches. The engine-turned bezel remains well defined with some light surface scuffs. The silver sigma dial remains excellent, with strong lume plots and black enamel-topped hour markers, while the hands show discoloured lume. The crystal shows surface scratches. It is fitted with a folded-link Jubilee bracelet showing surface marks and moderate play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 19 links and fits approximately a 7” wrist.
Our Perspective
Elegant, understated, and endlessly wearable, the Datejust ref. 1603 perfectly demonstrates why vintage Rolex Datejust models continue to offer some of the most appealing entry points into classic mid-century Rolex collecting.
