Introduction
Introduced in 1945 to celebrate Rolex's 40th anniversary, the Datejust established a new benchmark for the everyday luxury wristwatch. Combining an automatically wound chronometer movement with a date display that changed automatically at midnight, it became one of the defining models in the Rolex collection. Over the following decades, the Datejust evolved through numerous references, dial configurations and material combinations, while retaining the essential characteristics that made the original so successful. The introduction of the sapphire-crystal generation in the late 1980s brought further technical refinements, including the calibre 3135, while the familiar 36mm Oyster case continued to provide a balance between elegance and practicality.
Dating to 2002, this ref. 16203 combines a stainless steel Oyster case with yellow gold accents and a two-tone Jubilee bracelet. Its most distinctive feature is the white dial, which pairs diamond hour markers with small black Roman numerals in a configuration sometimes referred to by collectors as a Mini-Buckley dial. The combination creates an unusual interpretation of the classic Roman numeral Datejust, bringing together the graphic character of the black numerals and the decorative appeal of diamond setting. This example is also fitted with an 18K yellow gold fluted bezel, which differs from the smooth gold bezel originally specified for the ref. 16203 and has therefore been replaced at some point in the watch's history. The result is a distinctive Datejust that combines an uncommon dial configuration with the familiar two-tone aesthetic of Rolex's most enduring dress watch.

THE DIAL
The white dial features an unusual combination of diamond hour markers and small black Roman numerals, a configuration known among collectors as the Mini-Buckley dial. Its distinctive typography recalls the larger Roman numeral Buckley dials associated with earlier Datejust references, while the diamond setting introduces an additional decorative element.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 36mm Oyster case combines stainless steel with an 18K yellow gold bezel, complemented by a two-tone Jubilee bracelet. Importantly, the ref. 16203 was originally supplied with a smooth gold bezel, whereas this example features a fluted bezel that has been fitted subsequently. The screw-down crown, screw-down case back and sapphire crystal reflect the robust construction associated with this generation of Datejust.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case shows surface scratches and small nicks. The 18K yellow gold fluted bezel shows surface scratches. The non-luminous white diamond dial and hands are in near-mint condition. The crystal has some small chips. The stainless steel and 18K yellow gold solid-link Jubilee reference 62523 bracelet shows surface marks, with some more noticeable scuffs to the clasp and light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 20 links, six of which are removable, and fits approximately a 7½” wrist.
Please note: This watch would originally have been fitted with a smooth 18K yellow gold bezel, but it was changed at some point to the current fluted one.
Our Perspective
The Datejust's enduring appeal lies partly in the extraordinary variety of dial configurations Rolex produced over the decades. The combination of small black Roman numerals and diamond markers creates a distinctive appearance that sets it apart from more conventional two-tone Datejust models.
