Introduction
Released to celebrate Rolex's 40th anniversary in 1945, the Rolex Datejust has become one of the Genevan Giant's most iconic watches. The world's first wristwatch to display the date via an aperture on the dial, the Datejust revolutionized wristwatch design for decades to follow. With its emblematic Cyclops lens, jubilee bracelet (designed specifically for the model in 1945), and classy fluted precious metal bezel, the Datejust's aesthetic has always been that of pure elegance and class. Perhaps one of Rolex's most recognizable designs, the Datejust has evolved from its dressier roots into a perfectly capable timepiece rivaling the robustness of most brand's sports watches. Featuring a stainless steel case with a screw-down crown and caseback, the Datejust packs an impressive 100m of water resistance alongside its consistently capable movements and construction that have enabled it to become one of the best-equipped watches for daily wear and tear. Available with several different dial options, in a multitude of materials, and across many styles, the Datejust is an inescapable reflection of its owner, with a model out there to suit pretty much everybody's tastes and preferences.

THE DIAL
Incredibly rare and collectable on account of its blue lapis lazuli dial, this Datejust ref. 16234 lacks any hour markers and boasts various tones of blue, black, and gold within its hard stone dial which create a unique aesthetic that regular production Datejust models cannot emulate. Notably, these hard stone dials were typically only offered in precious metal models, and so this stainless steel Datejust was likely fitted with this dial following a request by a previous owner to Rolex.

THE CONSTRUCTION
This stainless steel example features the Datejust's signature jubilee bracelet and 18kt white gold fluted bezel, which, when paired with its rare lapis lazuli dial, creates a truly collectible timepiece.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall near-mint condition. The steel case shows light surface scratches from careful wear, with some signs of polishing visible around the lug holes. The white gold bezel remains well defined with light surface marks. The lapis lazuli hardstone dial remains near mint, with no cracks or fissures, while the hands are generally clean with a small scratch visible to the tip of the hour hand. It is fitted with a steel Jubilee bracelet showing light surface marks and light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 19 links, 2 of which are removable, and fits approximately a 7¼” wrist. Additionally, there are 3 links included. Comes with a 2007 Rolex service paper and a recent Rolex service card that shows a service date of February 2025.
Our Perspective
A rich blue semi-precious gemstone often used in ornaments, lapis lazuli serves as a wonderful material for watch dials. Its characteristic blue and black veining and gold spotting combine to create an effect only experienced in naturally occurring minerals.
