Introduction
The early years of the Rolex Datejust produced some of the most charismatic watches in the company's history, particularly the substantial, rounded references that collectors affectionately call 'Ovettone'. Meaning 'big egg' in Italian, the nickname describes the distinctive case architecture of these early self-winding date watches, whose pronounced case backs accommodated the automatic movement and calendar mechanism. Introduced in the years following the Datejust's debut in 1945, the ref. 6105 represents an important stage in the evolution of one of Rolex's most enduring designs. With its generous 36mm case, substantial proportions and characteristic bezel, it established much of the visual identity that would come to define the Datejust.
Dating to 1953, this example is particularly striking in 18K yellow gold, with a black gilt dial featuring applied arrow-shaped hour markers and elegant dagger hands. The contrast between the dark dial and warm gold furniture gives the watch a distinctly different personality from the more commonly encountered silvered configurations. Equally appealing is its matching yellow gold Rolex Jubilee bracelet, with a clasp stamped 4-53, dating it to the fourth quarter of 1953. Together, the substantial gold case, dramatic dial and period bracelet create a wonderfully cohesive example of early Rolex luxury watchmaking, from a period when the Datejust was still establishing the design language that would make it an enduring icon.

THE DIAL
The black gilt dial features applied gold arrow-shaped hour markers and elegant dagger hands, creating a particularly striking contrast against the dark surface. Gilt printing complements the gold furniture, while the date aperture at three o'clock provides the defining complication of Rolex's early calendar watches.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 36mm 18K yellow gold Oyster case features the characteristic rounded proportions and prominent case back that earned the reference its Ovettone nickname. Its distinctive engine-turned bezel combines elements of the early coin-edge design with the decorative character of later Datejust bezels.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows surface scratches and small nicks, as expected of a watch of this vintage, while remaining well defined. The coin-edge reeded bezel shows gentle wear around the edge in places. The black gilt dial is in excellent condition, with strong gilt printing to the upper half and minute track, while the overprinted OCC text in the lower half remains well defined. Minor surface aging is visible underneath the crazed crystal. The hands remain clean. The crystal has a large crack near 10 o’clock and shows crazing lines throughout. It is fitted with a matching date-stamped 18K yellow gold Jubilee bracelet showing surface marks and significant play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 21 links and fits approximately a 7½” wrist.
Our Perspective
The appeal of the Ovettone lies in its combination of early Rolex engineering and unmistakable mid-century character. The ref. 6105 is already a fascinating reference, but this example's black gilt dial, applied arrow markers and dagger hands give it an especially distinctive appearance. The yellow gold Jubilee bracelet, with its fourth-quarter 1953 clasp stamp, adds another layer of period appeal.
