Rolex Day-Date 1803 Tobacco Dial 18k YG

How do I bid? Start here

Introduction

Since its introduction in 1956, the Rolex Day-Date has stood as the flagship of the Rolex collection and one of the most recognisable luxury watches ever produced. The first wristwatch to display both the day of the week spelled out in full and the date, it quickly became synonymous with success, earning its reputation as the watch of presidents, business leaders and cultural icons. Produced exclusively in precious metals, the Day-Date has long served as Rolex's showcase for exceptional dial variations, many of which have become highly collectible in their own right.

Offered here is a particularly characterful ref. 1803 dating to 1972, featuring a striking tobacco pie-pan dial with applied baton hour markers beneath a warm acrylic crystal. Paired with a brown leather strap rather than the traditional President bracelet, this example presents a more understated and dress-oriented interpretation of the classic Day-Date.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The standout feature of this ref. 1803 is its attractive tobacco pie-pan dial, whose rich warm tones beautifully complement the yellow gold case. Applied baton hour markers and matching hands complete a classic vintage Rolex aesthetic, while the domed acrylic crystal enhances the dial's vintage character.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

Crafted in 18K yellow gold, the ref. 1803 features the classic fluted bezel and elegant proportions that established the Day-Date as Rolex's flagship dress watch. Presented on a brown leather strap, this example offers a refined alternative to the traditional President bracelet, lending it a distinctly understated appearance.

Condition

Watch is in overall very good condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows wear consistent with age, including some nicks and softened lug edges. The fluted bezel shows light scratches and has a slightly softened profile. The dial is excellent, with a couple of missing lume plots but crisp gold text. The later hands have a small patch of lume missing in the minute hand. It is fitted with a brown leather strap and a gold-colored buckle.

Our Perspective

Early Day-Date references continue to offer some of the greatest variety within vintage Rolex collecting, and unusual dial colours remain among the most sought-after configurations. With its attractive tobacco pie-pan dial, classic 18K yellow gold case and elegant leather strap presentation, this ref. 1803 offers an abundance of vintage character and represents an appealing entry into one of Rolex's most celebrated collections.
