Introduction

Few watches embody Rolex's philosophy of purposeful design quite like the Explorer. Its origins are closely associated with the pioneering Himalayan expeditions of the early 1950s, culminating in the successful ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953. Developed as a practical instrument for those operating in demanding environments, the Explorer became one of Rolex's most enduring professional watches. Introduced in 1959, the ref. 1016 would remain in production for approximately three decades, making it one of the longest-running references in the company's history. Its restrained 36mm Oyster case, distinctive 3-6-9 dial and chronometer-certified automatic movement established a design that has remained remarkably consistent across successive generations.

Dating to 1966, this ref. 1016 belongs to the final generation of gilt-dial Explorers, produced shortly before Rolex transitioned to matte black dials with white printed inscriptions. Its glossy black dial features the celebrated 3-6-9 configuration, with gilt lettering created through a galvanic manufacturing process that gives these early examples their distinctive appearance. More specifically, the dial belongs to the Type 6 variation, generally regarded as the last major gilt-dial execution used on the reference. Beneath the dial sits Rolex's automatic calibre 1570, housed within the familiar 36mm stainless steel Oyster case. The watch is fitted with a period-style riveted Oyster bracelet, completing the classic appearance of the early Explorer. Combining one of Rolex's most enduring designs with the distinctive character of its final gilt-dial generation, this example represents a particularly interesting period in the evolution of the reference.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The glossy black gilt dial features the Explorer's distinctive 3-6-9 configuration, with luminous hour markers and the familiar Mercedes-style hands. Identified as a Type 6 dial, this variation belongs to the final generation of gilt Explorers produced during the mid-1960s. Its gilt inscriptions are formed through a galvanic process, creating a distinctive contrast against the reflective black surface.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

The 36mm stainless steel Oyster case features a smooth polished bezel, screw-down crown and screw-down case back. Its compact proportions and straightforward construction reflect the Explorer's origins as a practical expedition watch. A domed acrylic crystal completes the traditional profile, while the riveted stainless steel Oyster bracelet reinforces its mid-century character.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case shows surface scratches and scuffs, as expected of a watch of this vintage, with some small nicks around the edge of the bezel. There are signs of a previous polish. The black gilt dial is in excellent condition, with some discolouration to the luminous hour plots. The hands show light surface marks, with some cracks to the luminous material in the hour and minute hands. The seconds hand is a slightly darker color than the other hands. The stainless steel Jubilee bracelet shows surface scratches and a couple of dings to the clasp, with significant play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 20 links and fits approximately a 7¼” wrist. Comes with inner and outer boxes, guarantee papers, chronometer timing papers and a very rare Explorer leaflet.

Our Perspective

The gilt-dial ref. 1016 represents one of the most appealing expressions of the vintage Explorer. Dating to 1966, this example features the desirable Type 6 dial, combining the warmth of gilt printing with the understated proportions that have defined the collection for generations.
