Rolex Explorer 1016 Matte Dial

How do I bid? Start here

Introduction

Introduced in 1959, the Rolex Explorer ref. 1016 would become one of the longest-running references in the brand’s history, remaining in production for almost three decades. Its enduring appeal lies in the simplicity of its formula: a compact 36mm Oyster case, highly legible 3-6-9 dial, automatic movement and no unnecessary complications. Designed as a robust tool watch, the 1016 has subsequently become one of the most recognisable and collectible vintage Rolex sports models.

Dating to 1966, the present example is fitted with a later Mk 4 matte Explorer dial, reflecting the reality of many vintage Rolex watches that were maintained and updated during their working lives.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

Fitted with a later Mk 4 matte black dial, this ref. 1016 retains all of the defining elements of the classic Explorer design, including its oversized 3-6-9 Arabic numerals, inverted triangle at 12 o’clock and highly legible Mercedes handset. It is a wonderfully functional layout whose clarity and restraint have made the 1016 one of Rolex’s most enduring designs.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

At 36mm, the ref. 1016 combines the familiar proportions of the classic Rolex Oyster case with the robustness expected of a watch originally conceived for exploration. Its smooth bezel, drilled lugs and simple three-hand configuration give it an understated appearance that has changed remarkably little across subsequent generations of the Explorer.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows surface scratches and nicks, with some light dings to the bezel and signs of a previous polish. The original dial and hands were replaced at some point. The currently fitted MK 4 dial and hands are in near-mint condition. The acrylic crystal shows some surface scratches. It is fitted with a solid-link Oyster bracelet showing surface marks and signs of wear, with light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 12 links, 2 of which are removable, and fits approximately a 6½” wrist. There is 1 spare link included.

Our Perspective

Few vintage Rolex watches distil the brand’s original tool-watch philosophy as effectively as the Explorer 1016. Produced for nearly three decades yet retaining essentially the same fundamental design throughout its life, it has become a benchmark for understated vintage sports watches.
