Introduction
The Rolex GMT-Master is one of the most important professional watches of the twentieth century, born from the extraordinary expansion of international commercial aviation during the 1950s. Developed in response to the needs of pilots flying increasingly long distances across multiple time zones, the GMT-Master allowed its wearer to track a second time zone using an additional 24-hour hand and a rotating bezel. Introduced in the mid 1950s, the ref. 6542 established the fundamental design of the collection, combining a distinctive fourth hand with a 24-hour bezel insert made from Bakelite. Its colourful appearance, innovative functionality and association with the golden age of transatlantic travel would establish the GMT-Master as one of Rolex's most recognisable watches.
Dating to 1955, this particular early ref. 6542 is distinguished by an exceptionally unusual dial configuration, featuring the GMT-MASTER designation printed in red alongside the depth rating of 50m = 165ft. Both details are rarely encountered on early GMT-Masters, making their combination particularly fascinating. The black dial retains the familiar applied luminous hour markers, while the additional red-tipped 24-hour hand provides an unmistakable connection to the reference's aviation origins. Equally important is the Bakelite bezel insert, a defining feature of the earliest GMT-Masters and one that would eventually be replaced by more durable alternatives. With its distinctive dial typography, early case architecture and original design language, this example represents a particularly intriguing variation of the watch that established Rolex's GMT-Master dynasty.

THE DIAL
The black dial features an exceptionally rare combination of a red GMT-MASTER designation and a 50m = 165ft depth rating. Applied luminous hour markers and the red-tipped 24-hour hand provides the reference's defining additional time-zone indication.

THE BEZEL
The Bakelite bezel is among the most recognisable features of the original GMT-Master. Its translucent construction and luminous 24-hour numerals give it a depth and character quite unlike later aluminium inserts.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case retains exceptional definition, with sharp bevels to the lugs and some surface scratches and scuffs, as expected of a watch of this vintage. The case back shows light scuffs and some minor damage to a few of the teeth. The bezel shows some marks and degradation to the finish, while the Bakelite insert exhibits surface cracks, although the luminous material remains in excellent condition. The later Twinlock winding crown has a couple of small dings. The black gilt dial is in near-mint condition, with crisp printing and excellent luminous hour plots, including the correct contrasting hue at 6 o’clock. The hands show some surface marks, while the red 24-hour hand has some missing paint, but retains its original "slathered on" lume that covers the entire tip. (A characteristic of early 24hr hands on 6542s) It is fitted with a stainless steel riveted Oyster bracelet showing surface marks, a monogram on the clasp, and light play between the links. The inner clasp blades are engraved ‘Staten Island New York’ alongside the correct Rolex markings dated 1st quarter 1956. The bracelet is fitted with 12 links and fits approximately a 7½” wrist.
Please note: The watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.
Our Perspective
The first-generation GMT-Master is already one of the most compelling vintage Rolex sports watches, but this example offers something considerably more unusual. The combination of red GMT-MASTER lettering and a printed depth rating creates a dial configuration that stands apart from the familiar early GMT-Master variations. Add the distinctive Bakelite bezel and the wonderfully purposeful proportions of the original 6542, and the result is a watch that captures both the pioneering spirit of Rolex's aviation instruments and the extraordinary detail that makes collecting early examples so rewarding.
