Introduction

Stemming from Rolex’s acceptance of the idea that some of their customers would like to own a second watch, the Rolex Cellini collection is perhaps one of the brands most widely varied collections, with round leather strapped dress watches to oval shaped pieces of distilled excellence and even integrated bracelet watches like the King Midas ref. 4611 that we have here, the collection is varied and rich with diversity. Launched in the 1960s, Rolex approached a young Gerald Genta to design a gold watch fit for royalty. Inspired by several of the Greek temples in Athens, Genta designed the King Midas references with a variety of shapes ranging from asymmetrical pentagon-shaped models with a left-handed crown arrangement to more symmetrical models like the ref. 4611 that we have here that also kept the integrated bracelet of its sibing models. Named after King Midas, whose touch could turn anything to gold, the King Midas was an exclusive timepiece that weighed double that of a Day-Date, Rolex’s flagship and most exclusive collection. Taking elements of King Midas’ story and implementing them into the watch itself, Genta showcased his ability to create a unique watch unlike anything else. With its unique case reflecting the design of a temple roof and hefty 18kt gold construction taking inspiration from King Midas’ golden touch, the King Midas is perhaps one of Rolex’s most unique watches ever, and with its diamond-set bezel and rich blue lapis lazuli and diamond dial, this ref. 4611 is aesthetically rich, luxurious and even more exclusive than an already rare non—diamond-set King Midas would be – a true collector’s piece in every sense imaginable.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

In addition to its incredibly unique 18kt yellow gold construction, this example also boasts a diamond-set bezel and a blue lapis lazuli stone at the center of its dial that is surrounded by more diamonds and contrasts the ref. 4611's brushed surfaces with an intoxicating sparkle.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

With its 18kt yellow gold construction boasting a subtle brushed horizontal grain across its white gold surfaces, this King Midas shows a unique character that pairs beautifully with its bright blue stone dial and diamond-set bezel and display.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

Watch is in excellent overall condition. Case is very sharp and the hallmarks on the 9 o'clock side as well as the ones on the caseback and bracelet are crisp and fully legible. The original lapis diamond dial is excellent, with no visible cracks. The dial is signed "MIDAS" only, and is one of the earlier production watches predating the use of "CELLINI". The bracelet has 22 links total, 6 of which are removable. It fits an approx 8" wrist. There is little to no stretch in the band. Please note that the watch is ticking and appears to run at the time of cataloging, but the timekeeping is poor as indicated by the timing machine readout, and a service is recommended.

Our Perspective

An entirely unique watch that completely breaks from Rolex convention, the King Midas offered, and still offers, a completely different experience and aesthetic from anything the brand has ever produced. This example is one of the most coveted, with its plethora of factory-set diamond accents, and a beautiful lapis lazuli stone dial.
