Introduction
The reference 6084 belongs to an important transitional period in Rolex history, bridging the celebrated Bubbleback era and the more streamlined Oyster Perpetual watches that would define the brand through the 1950s and beyond. Often referred to by collectors as a “Semi-Bubbleback”, these watches retained the automatic architecture and character of their predecessors while adopting a flatter, more modern case profile.
Dating to the early 1950s, this example is particularly attractive in 18k yellow gold, with a wonderfully textured waffle, or hobnail, dial complemented by applied gold indexes and elegant dauphine hands. Adding further period character is the original Rolex Super Oyster crown, the short-lived non-screw-down crown system introduced around the turn of the 1950s.

THE DIAL
The warm cream dial features a beautifully intricate waffle, or hobnail, texture characteristic of some of Rolex's most desirable dials from the period. Applied gold hour markers and dauphine hands complete a distinctly mid-century aesthetic, with the geometric dial surface changing noticeably as it catches the light.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Executed in 18k yellow gold, the ref. 6084 represents the evolution away from the pronounced domed case backs that gave the earlier Bubblebacks their nickname, resulting in the slimmer profile that has led collectors to describe these transitional watches as “Semi-Bubblebacks”. This example retains its original Rolex Super Oyster crown, an unusual non-screw-down design used by Rolex for a relatively brief period before the manufacture returned to the familiar screw-down Oyster crown.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows surface scratches and nicks, as expected of a watch of this vintage, with signs of a previous polish. The case back is clean and retains sharp teeth. The hallmark to the rear of the lug remains crisp. The watch retains its rare original Super Oyster crown. The waffle dial is in excellent condition, with some damage and discolouration to the luminous material in several of the hour plots. The hands remain clean, with some surface scratches and later luminous material. It is fitted with a green leather strap and an 18K yellow gold Rolex pin buckle.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
The ref. 6084 captures Rolex at a fascinating point of transition, retaining much of the charm of the Bubbleback era while anticipating the cleaner Oyster Perpetual designs of the 1950s. In 18k yellow gold, with its richly textured waffle dial, dauphine hands and original Super Oyster crown, this example brings together several details that make early post-war Rolex watches so compelling to collectors.
