Rolex Oyster Perpetual 6085 Retailed by Brock and Co. Major Harold Collins World Speed Record Presentation Watch

Introduction

Famed as the base model that all of Rolex’s sports models use as their foundations, the Oyster Perpetual is an iconic watch that has a profound impact on horology. While its no-frills stainless steel construction is utilitarian, its design is equally timeless and classic. With its smooth stainless steel bezel and clean dial, the Oyster Perpetual has long been a collector favorite. Launched in 1951, the Oyster Perpetual ref. 6065 featured an automatic movement within its 34mm case and came in a variety of styles. Offered here, however, we do not have an ordinary Oyster Perpetual ref. 6085. Indeed, it is the example that was presented to Major Harold Collins by James H. "Dutch" Kindelberger, the CEO of North American Aviation, upon Collins’ setting of then new world speed record of 707.889 mph in an F86D Sabre Jet, which was manufactured by North American Aviation. Featuring an engraved case commemorating the record along with additional provenance and a gorgeously tropicalized co-signed dial bearing the signature of L.A.-based retailer Brock & Co., this example showcases the very best that the world of vintage horology has to offer with its rich provenance and heritage.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

The watch is in overall very good condition. The stainless steel case has some marks and nicks as expected for a watch of this vintage. The case proportions are very good, with symmetrical lugs and well-defined edges. The case back features a personal engraving. The watch retains its original non-screw-down Super Oyster crown. The engine-turned bezel remains very well defined. The acrylic crystal has some crazing and is chipped around the edges. The dial is double-signed Brock & Co and has a pleasing patina, with all radium lume plots intact, while the hands show some light oxidation. The watch is fitted with a brown lizard Rolex strap with a gold-plated Rolex buckle and comes with an additional strap, as well as a comprehensive selection of memorabilia related to the original owner's military service. Please note that the watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

Tying the world of horology and aviation together in a very real and palpable way, this example combines rich provenance with an already desirable watch - a co-signed ref. 6085 - to create the ultimate collector's package.
