Introduction
The Rolex Bubbleback represents an important stage in the development of the automatic wristwatch, combining the waterproof Oyster case with Rolex's early self-winding Perpetual mechanism. The additional depth required to accommodate the automatic winding system resulted in the prominently domed case back that ultimately gave these watches their enduring nickname. Produced in numerous case metals and dial configurations throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Bubblebacks have consequently become a particularly rich area of early Rolex collecting.
Dating to the late 1930s, this ref. 3372 is rendered entirely in 18K rose gold and is distinguished by its retailer-signed dial and matching period Oyster bracelet. The salmon-coloured dial carries the signature of W. Rosch Berne, the Swiss retailer, beneath Rolex's own branding and is fitted with contrasting white-metal applied hour markers, alternating between Arabic numerals at the even hours and baton indexes at the odd. Completing the unusually cohesive appearance is an 18K rose gold Rolex Oyster bracelet. The combination of precious-metal case and bracelet, salmon dial and retailer signature gives this compact early automatic Rolex considerably more individuality than a conventional Bubbleback configuration.

THE DIAL
The rare salmon-coloured dial is further distinguished by its W. Rosch Berne retailer signature. Contrasting white-metal applied hour markers alternate between Arabic numerals at the even hours and baton indexes at the odd, creating an unusual two-tone effect against the warm dial and surrounding 18K rose gold case.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The compact 31mm Oyster case is fashioned from 18K rose gold and uses a screw-down case back to protect the automatic movement within. Particularly notable is the matching 18K rose gold Rolex Oyster bracelet, giving the watch a coherent precious-metal construction and adding considerably to the character of this 1940s configuration.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The 18K rose gold case shows surface scratches and marks, as expected of a watch of this vintage. The engine-turned bezel shows some wear around the edge. The original Rolex Oyster winding crown remains present and shows gentle wear. The dial shows some minor surface marks, with crisp text and clean applied hour markers. The hands remain clean. It is fitted with an 18K rose gold Oyster bracelet showing surface scratches and significant play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 12 links and fits approximately a 7” wrist.
Please note: The watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.
Our Perspective
Bubblebacks are fascinating precisely because of the variety found within them, and this ref. 3372 brings together several particularly appealing details. Its 18K rose gold case and matching Oyster bracelet provide the foundation, but the salmon dial with contrasting white-metal markers and W. Rosch Berne retailer signature makes the watch especially distinctive. It is an evocative example of the period when Rolex's emerging automatic technology was still being expressed through remarkably varied and often highly individual designs.
