The Rolex Bubbleback occupies an important place in the development of the modern automatic wristwatch. Following the introduction of the waterproof Oyster case in 1926, Rolex turned its attention to automatic winding, developing its Perpetual rotor system during the early 1930s. The movement required additional vertical space, resulting in the strongly domed screw-down case back that would eventually give these watches their enduring “Bubbleback” nickname. By the late 1940s, references such as the 5050 represented a mature expression of the concept, combining the Oyster case, automatic winding and centre seconds in a remarkably compact package.

Dating to circa 1949, this stainless steel ref. 5050 measures just 32mm across, but its substantial 14.5mm profile gives it unmistakable presence. The defining feature of this example is its luminous dial, which has aged dramatically from its original appearance to a warm golden-brown tone with an almost crème brûlée-like surface. Rather than the uniform colour of a conventional brown dial, its attraction lies in the irregularity and depth created by decades of ageing. Powered by the automatic Rolex calibre 630, this is a particularly characterful example of one of the foundational designs in Rolex's history.

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case remains very well defined, with surface marks as expected of a watch of this vintage. A crisp stamped “C” remains on the rear of one lug. The case back shows scratches, with the teeth remaining well defined. The original Rolex Oyster winding crown remains present. The dial has aged to a tropical hue, with some blistering across the surface. The minute hand has lost some of its luminous material, while the seconds hand has had red paint added to the tip. It is fitted with a leather strap and steel pin buckle.
