Introduction
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Bubbleback occupies an important place in the development of the modern automatic wristwatch. Introduced during the 1930s, the early Oyster Perpetual models combined Rolex's waterproof Oyster case with its revolutionary self-winding Perpetual movement, creating a watch that helped establish the foundations of the brand's enduring reputation. The distinctive rounded case back, necessary to accommodate the automatic winding mechanism, gave rise to the affectionate Bubbleback nickname. Produced in numerous configurations throughout the 1930s, 1940s and early 1950s, these watches became a fascinating showcase for Rolex's experimentation with case designs, dial treatments and precious-metal combinations. Among the most interesting are the less conventional references featuring decorative lugs and elaborate bracelets, which reflect the considerable stylistic diversity of Rolex's early automatic watches.
Dating to the 1940s, this Oyster Perpetual ref. 6087 is a particularly unusual example, combining stainless steel and 18K rose gold in an elegant 31mm case. Its most distinctive feature is the pair of hooded lugs, decorated with an intricate wave-pattern guilloché texture that gives the watch an unmistakable Art Deco character. The rose gold bezel frames a salmon-coloured dial with printed Arabic numerals and radium luminous accents, creating a harmonious combination of warm metallic tones. Equally noteworthy is the accompanying Rolex-signed two-tone bamboo-style bracelet, manufactured by the celebrated specialist bracelet maker Gay Frères in matching rose gold and stainless steel. Together, the decorative case, salmon dial and unusual bracelet give this Bubbleback a character quite unlike the more familiar examples of Rolex's early Oyster Perpetual collection.

THE DIAL
The salmon-coloured dial features printed Arabic numerals, reflecting the distinctive typography and design of Rolex's mid-century Oyster Perpetual models. Its warm colouring complements the rose gold elements of the case, while the combination of luminous markings and restrained detailing provides a pleasing balance between functionality and decorative appeal.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 31mm three-piece Oyster case combines stainless steel with an 18K rose gold concave bezel and decorative hooded lugs. Particularly distinctive are the wave-pattern guilloché surfaces of the gold hoods, an elaborate detail seldom encountered on conventional Bubbleback models. The screw-down crown and case back retain the fundamental construction principles of Rolex's waterproof Oyster design.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case shows surface scratches and marks, as expected of a watch of this vintage. The case back shows scratches, while the 18K rose gold lug hoods exhibit gentle wear to the guilloché finish. The 18K rose gold bezel remains well defined. The original non-screw-down Super Oyster winding crown is still present. The salmon dial shows surface marks and some discolouration to the luminous material in the Arabic hour markers. The blued hands exhibit some oxidation, with a crack to the luminous material in the hour hand and discolouration to the luminous material in the minute hand. It is fitted with a stainless steel and 18K rose gold bracelet with Rolex-signed clasp blades. The bracelet fits approximately a 6¾” wrist.
Our Perspective
The ref. 6087 demonstrates the remarkable variety of Rolex's early Oyster Perpetual designs. Its guilloché hooded lugs, salmon dial and matching Gay Frères bamboo bracelet create an exceptionally distinctive combination, offering collectors a fascinating alternative to the more familiar Bubbleback configurations.
