Introduction
Famed as the base model that all of Rolex’s sports models use as their foundations, the Oyster is an iconic watch that has a profound impact on horology. While its no-frills stainless steel construction is utilitarian, its design is equally timeless and classic. With its smooth stainless steel bezel and clean dial, the Oyster has long been a collector favourite. Offered here as an off-shoot of the Oyster we have the Oyster Royal ref. 2280, a 31mm manual-wind timepiece available within Commonwealth nations during the 1940s. Our example features a stainless steel case, an Arabic dial with an aged golden patina, and a large OYSTER PATENT-signed winding crown that serves to cap off what is a wonderfully charismatic piece of mid-century watchmaking history.

THE DIAL
Featuring a nicely aged dial with an even, champagne golden patina across its surface, this example's applied Arabic numerals pop beautifully against their brighter backdrop.

THE CONSTRUCTION
While its 31mm diameter might seem small, its large winding crown ensures that this ref. 2280 wears with the poise of a larger watch, making it perfect for today's sizing standards where small watches reign supreme.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows surface scratches and nicks as expected of a watch of this vintage, while the case back retains a well-defined serial number. There is some pitting visible along the mid-case. The watch retains its original Oyster Patent crown. The original dial with applied Arabic numerals and minute track has developed a pleasing patina and remains in excellent condition, while the blued hands show some minor marks. It is fitted with a crocodile strap and a steel pin buckle, both remaining in excellent condition.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
A beautifully designed watch with its understated flat bezel, appealing champagne Arabic dial, and large winding crown, this Rolex ref. 2280 will certainly make for a unique addition to any collection.
