Introduction
Introduced in 1969, the Rolex Submariner ref. 1680 marked a major milestone in the evolution of Rolex’s legendary dive watch as the first Submariner reference to feature a date display. Alongside the addition of the Cyclops magnifier, early examples of the ref. 1680 are distinguished by the now-famous red “Submariner” text printed on the dial, a detail that would later give rise to the collector nickname “Red Sub.” Produced across several dial variations, or “Marks,” these watches have become some of the most studied and collectible vintage Rolex sports models. The Mark V dial configuration represents one of the later and most refined executions within the Red Submariner production run. Combining classic Submariner proportions with the bold typography and practical functionality that defined the era, the ref. 1680 remains one of the cornerstone references in vintage Rolex collecting.

THE DIAL
The Mark V dial features the signature red “Submariner” text that defines the early ref. 1680 production series and has made the “Red Sub” one of the most iconic vintage Rolex sports watches.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 40mm Oyster case retains the classic proportions and rotating bezel that define the vintage Submariner design language. Combined with the acrylic crystal, screw-down crown, and Rolex USA C&I bracelet, the case perfectly reflects the robust and highly functional character that made the Submariner a benchmark professional diving instrument during the 1970s.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows light surface scratches and signs of a previous polish. The bezel remains well defined, with the insert showing only a couple of minor scratches. The Mark 5 “Red” dial is excellent, with crisp text and a couple of small spots visible in the lume plots. The hands appear to have been relumed at some point. It is fitted with a C&I Rolex rivet-link Oyster bracelet showing light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 11 links and fits approximately a 7¾” wrist.
Our Perspective
As one of the most iconic and studied vintage Rolex sports watches ever produced, the “Red Sub” perfectly combines collectible nuance, classic dive-watch design, and enduring tool-watch appeal.
