Introduction
First introduced in 1953, the Rolex Submariner established the blueprint for the modern dive watch and quickly became one of the most influential sports watches ever produced. In 1969, Rolex expanded the line with the launch of the Submariner Date, adding the now-iconic magnified date display that would become a defining feature of the collection. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, references such as the Submariner ref. 16613 combined the model’s professional diving heritage with increasingly luxurious materials, pairing stainless steel with yellow gold in Rolex’s signature Rolesor construction. Powered by Rolex’s reliable automatic movement and fitted with the classic blue dial and bezel configuration, the ref. 16613 became one of the most recognizable Submariner variants of the era. Particularly unusual examples whose blue dials have aged into vibrant purple tones have become especially collectible among enthusiasts, with this watch earning the affectionate nickname “Barney” among collectors.

THE DIAL
Originally produced with a blue dial, the surface has transformed over time into a vivid purple tone, giving rise to the watch’s collector nickname “Barney.” The dramatic color shift creates a highly unusual and visually striking appearance that contrasts beautifully against the yellow gold accents and classic Submariner layout with luminous hour markers and Mercedes hands.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 40mm Oyster case combines stainless steel and yellow gold in Rolex’s signature Rolesor construction, balancing professional diving functionality with a more luxurious sporting aesthetic. Retaining its original proportions and paired with the correct Rolex ref. 93153 bracelet, the watch perfectly captures the bold and unmistakable character of the Submariner design.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case remains well defined, with surface scratches visible throughout, while the case back retains remnants of the original sticker. The yellow gold bezel and insert remain near mint. The dial has developed a pleasing tropical purple hue and remains in excellent condition, while the hands remain near mint. It is fitted with an excellent steel and yellow gold solid-link Oyster bracelet showing light surface marks and scuffs with light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 11 links, 1 of which is removable, and fits approximately a 7¼” wrist.
Our Perspective
With its vibrant purple tropical dial and unmistakable early-1990s Rolex aesthetic, the “Barney” Submariner stands as one of the most entertaining and visually distinctive variations within modern Submariner collecting.
