Introduction
Debuting in 1953 and released to the public the following year, the Rolex Submariner has undoubtedly become one of the most iconic timepieces of all time thanks to its legendary status as Rolex's flagship dive watch. Used extensively by the British Royal Navy and professional diving operations like COMEX, the Submariner set the bar for all dive watches to follow. Featuring a genuinely timeless design that has remained relatively unchanged throughout its history, this Rolex has become the archetypal sports watch. With very few large-scale aesthetic upgrades made to it over the years except for timely advancements like introducing a date function to the collection in the late '60s, and its modern cerachrom bezels, the Submariner is seen as the prototypical dive watch thanks to its consistency. The Submariner has earned its status as a legendary watch, with it today remaining as one of the most sought-after timepieces around.
The 5513 was produced from 1962 to 1988, and was the non-chronometer version of the non-date Submariner. There were a multitude of dial variants made over those 26 years, ranging from gilt chapter ring dials in the beginning to matte dials, then ultimately the glossy dials with white gold luminous surrounds. This particular version is perhaps the most desirable of them all. Produced until the mid-1960's, legend has it that these 3-6-9 dial versions were made and sold exclusively in commonwealth countries, although more recent scholarly research shows advertisements for these variants in other countries. The dials feature a similar layout as the venerable Explorer model, and are found exclusively in gilt dial configurations.

THE DIAL
Offered as an exceptionally early example of the ref. 5513 from 1962, this ref. 5513 features a rare "Explorer dial" with 3-6-9 Arabic numerals like those seen on the Rolex Explorer. Additionally, those numerals and the dials accompanying indices and hands have a rich golden patina that is as stunning as it is unique. This is a "Kissing L" variation, as the L and E in rolex are very closely spaced, as if they are kissing.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Considered by many to be the quintessential Rolex Submariner, the ref. 5513 is a true icon. Boasting sharp bezel serrations, pointed crown guards, a well-preserved jet-black aluminum bezel insert featuring a nicely-aged lume pip that matches the patina seen on its dial, this example is truly exceptional.

Condition
Watch is in excellent overall condition. Case shows wear comesurate with its age, but the lugs remain thick. The serial number and case number between the lugs are fully legible. Bezel shows minor wear, and an intact pearl. Original "Kissing L" Explorer dial in excellent condition. There is light even spotting visible on the surface, but it remains glossy. Very minor wear on the edge of the dial visible. The luminous on the dial is original and exhibits minor surface wear. Swiss rivet bracelet has 12 links, and shows minor stretch.
Our Perspective
Perhaps the ultimate Rolex Submariner, the ref. 5513 has provided the modern Submariner with the foundation upon which it is still built today, and so this example, with its rare Explorer dial, is all the more special.
