Rolex Submariner 5513 Meters First

How do I bid? Start here

Introduction

Debuting in 1953 and released to the public the following year, the Rolex Submariner has undoubtedly become one of the most iconic timepieces of all time thanks to its legendary status as Rolex's flagship dive watch. Used extensively by the British Royal Navy and professional diving operations like COMEX, the Submariner set the bar for all dive watches to follow. Featuring a genuinely timeless design that has remained relatively unchanged throughout its history, this Rolex has become the archetypal sports watch. With very few large-scale aesthetic upgrades made to it over the years except for timely advancements like introducing a date function to the collection in the late '60s, and its modern cerachrom bezels, the Submariner is seen as the prototypical dive watch thanks to its consistency. The Submariner has earned its status as a legendary watch, with it today remaining as one of the most sought-after timepieces around.

The 5513 was produced from 1962 to 1988, and was the non-chronometer version of the non-date Submariner. There were a multitude of dial variants made over those 26 years, ranging from gilt chapter ring dials in the beginning to matte dials, then ultimately the glossy dials with white gold luminous surrounds.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Fitted with a meters first dial, these replaced the gilt dial variants in mid-late 1960s, and feature a zinc sulfide lume that often still glows in the dark when charged with an external lighting source.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Offered on a Jubilee bracelet that gives the Submariner's tool watch aesthetic a more luxurious feeling on the wrist, this example is filled with character and intrigue.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

Watch is in overall very good condition. The steel case shows surface scratches and a couple of more noticeable dings to the lug edges, with some softening and signs of a previous polish. The bezel remains reasonably well defined with surface scratches, while the insert remains quite clean. The so-called meters-first dial is excellent, with clean lume plots, while the hands show a few small spots in the lume. It is fitted with a steel Jubilee bracelet showing surface scratches and moderate play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 20 links and fits approximately a 7¼” wrist. Additionally, there are 2 links included. Please note that the watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.

Our Perspective

The Submariner ref. 5513 is simply one of the most iconic sport watches that Rolex has ever made. With aged luminous, matching hands and a beautiful meters first dial all within a nicely preserved construction on a Jubilee bracelet, this is an excellent example you won't want to miss.
