Introduction
Debuting in 1953 and released to the public the following year, the Rolex Submariner has undoubtedly become one of the most iconic timepieces of all time thanks to its legendary status as Rolex's flagship dive watch. Used extensively by the British Royal Navy and professional diving operations like COMEX, the Submariner set the bar for all dive watches to follow. Featuring a genuinely timeless design that has remained relatively unchanged throughout its history, this Rolex has become the archetypal sports watch. With very few large-scale aesthetic upgrades made to it over the years except for timely advancements like introducing a date function to the collection in the late '60s, and its modern cerachrom bezels, the Submariner is seen as the prototypical dive watch thanks to its consistency. The Submariner has earned its status as a legendary watch, with it today remaining as one of the most sought-after timepieces around.
The 5513 was produced from 1962 to 1988, and was the non-chronometer version of the non-date Submariner. There were a multitude of dial variants made over those 26 years, ranging from gilt chapter ring dials in the beginning to matte dials, then ultimately the glossy dials with white gold luminous surrounds.

THE DIAL
Fitted with a meters first dial, these replaced the gilt dial variants in mid-late 91960s, and feature a zinc sulfide lume that often still glows in the dark when charged with an external lighting source.

THE MOVEMENT
In order to circumvent duties on Swiss watch movements with over 17 jewels, Rolex made 17 jewel cal. 1520 movements specifically for USA market watches. This is one of those watches.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

Condition
Watch is in very good overall condition, with a case that shows signs of previous polishing and some marks on the case and case back. lugs are soft and have lost some definition. The bezel remains well-defined, with a couple of visible marks on the insert. Dial in excellent condition, with signs of aging on the luminous plots. The hands are a good match to the hour markers in tone. The later solid link Oyster bracelet has moderate stretch and some notching. It is currently fitted for a 6.5" wrist, but there are 2 additional links that are included with the watch.
Our Perspective
The Maxi Dial 5513 is simply one of the most iconic sport watches that Rolex has ever made. With aged luminous, matching hands and a beautiful meter first dial all within a nicely preserved construction, this is an excellent example you won't want to miss.
