Rolex Submariner 5513 MK1 Maxi Dial

How do I bid? Start here

Introduction

Debuting in 1953 and released to the public the following year, the Rolex Submariner has undoubtedly become one of the most iconic timepieces of all time thanks to its legendary status as Rolex's flagship dive watch. Used extensively by the British Royal Navy and professional diving operations like COMEX, the Submariner set the bar for all dive watches to follow. Featuring a genuinely timeless design that has remained relatively unchanged throughout its history, the Rolex has become the archetypal sports watch. With very few large-scale aesthetic upgrades made to it over the years except for timely advancements like introducing a date function to the collection in the late '60s, and its modern cerachrom bezels, the Submariner is seen as the prototypical dive watch thanks to its consistency. The Submariner has earned its status as a legendary watch, with it today remaining as one of the most sought-after timepieces around.

The 5513 was produced from 1962 to 1988, and was the non-chronometer version of the non-date Submariner. There were a multitude of dial variants made over those 26 years, ranging from gilt chapter ring dials in the beginning to matte dials, then ultimately the glossy dials with white gold luminous surrounds. Offered here we have the maxi-dial ref. 5513 with its larger-than-normal luminescent hour markers, or “Maxi” plots as they are also known.

THE DIAL

With its large Maxi plot hour markers, this MK1 Max dial's white luminous pops against the black backdrop with impeccable clarity and vigor.

THE BEZEL

Offered in excellent condition, this example's black anodized aluminum bezel insert remains unscratched, unmarked, and unaged with its pitch-black appearance unchanged from when it left Rolex's factory.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

Watch is in overall very good/ excellent condition. The MK1 Maxi dial is flawless and the original tritium luminous plots are still white and match the tritium hands. The bezel insert was likely replaced at service in the 1980s as they are later than the watch. The 93150 oyster bracelet has 10 links in total and shows little to no stretch.

Our Perspective

One of the most iconic Rolex models of all time, if not the most iconic watch of all time, this is a great opportunity to get your hands on an example that looks like it is straight out of the AD's showcase.
