Introduction

Few watches have shaped the history of modern sports watches as profoundly as the Rolex Submariner. Introduced in 1953, it established the template for the professional dive watch, combining robust Oyster case construction, exceptional legibility and genuine underwater capability in a design that has remained remarkably consistent for more than seventy years. While countless references have followed, the Submariner's enduring appeal lies in its continual refinement rather than wholesale reinvention, making vintage examples among the most studied and collected Rolex models today.

Produced from 1962 until 1988, the reference 5513 enjoyed one of the longest production runs of any Submariner and evolved through numerous dial variations that have become a cornerstone of vintage Rolex scholarship. Dating to 1978, this example features the coveted Mk1 Maxi dial, introduced during the late 1970s and distinguished by its noticeably larger tritium hour plots. The enlarged luminous markers gave the watch a bolder appearance while improving legibility, creating one of the most desirable matte-dial configurations of the reference. Powered by the reliable calibre 1520 and preserving the clean, no-date symmetry that many collectors consider the purest expression of the Submariner, the Mk1 Maxi 5513 represents one of the defining references of vintage Rolex collecting.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The matte black Mk1 Maxi dial is distinguished by its oversized tritium hour plots, which give the watch its distinctive nickname. Combined with the clean two-line text and classic Mercedes handset, it represents one of the most sought-after dial configurations produced during the 5513's long production run.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

The 40mm Oyster case remains one of the most recognisable designs in watchmaking, combining balanced proportions with exceptional robustness. Its rotating dive bezel, screw-down Triplock crown and solid Oyster construction established a blueprint that continues to define the modern Submariner.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows surface scratches and light scuffs, with signs of a previous polish. The bezel remains well defined and is fitted with a clean black insert. The dial is excellent, with small patches of discolouration to the luminous material in places. The hands show spots of oxidation, with patchy luminous material. It is fitted with a solid-link Oyster bracelet showing surface scratches and light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 10 links and fits approximately a 7” wrist.

Our Perspective

Among matte-dial Submariners, the Mk1 Maxi occupies a particularly special place. Its larger luminous plots subtly transformed the appearance of the 5513 while retaining the clean simplicity that has made the no-date Submariner such an enduring icon.
